Chapter 14 - The Final Choice

The countdown inside Leo’s head ticked away with agonizing slowness as the heavy steel door began to bow outward under the immense pressure of a magnetic breaching charge being armed on the other side.
He placed both hands on the delicate glass vial inside the blue wheelchair’s hidden chassis. The glass was cool to the touch, vibrating with a high-frequency hum that signaled the system was fully primed.
Behind him, a sudden, sharp cry filled the room—a bright, beautiful, piercing sound that cut through the tension like a ray of sunlight.
Leo turned his head in disbelief. In the arms of Officer Davis, wrapped hastily in a sterile white blanket, lay a tiny, newborn baby, crying healthily into the sterile air of the fallout shelter.
His mother let out a soft, exhausted laugh, tears streaming down her face as she reached out weakly to touch the infant's tiny hand.
"It's a girl, Leo," she whispered, her voice filled with overwhelming relief and love. "You have a baby sister."
Leo stared at the newborn, the profound weight of the moment crashing over him. The pursuit, the danger, the terrifying underground chase—it all faded into insignificance compared to the fragile new life now resting safely in the room.
He looked back down at the glass vial in the wheelchair. Without a moment's hesitation, Leo gripped the top of the vial and twisted it hard until it snapped with a sharp, clean crack.
A bright flash of blue light illuminated the compartment as the liquid matrix dissolved instantly, neutralizing the encryption core into harmless vapor with a soft hiss. The pulsing blue lights on the wheelchair went dark, one by one, until the machine was nothing more than an ordinary, empty medical chair.

At that exact second, the heavy steel door exploded inward with a deafening blast, sending smoke and shrapnel flying across the room as heavy combat boots stepped over the shattered threshold.
