Chapter 5 - The Emergency Brake

The screech of metal against metal echoed through the subway car with deafening intensity as the train suddenly jolted forward, throwing Officer Miller off balance and sending the blue wheelchair rolling violently toward the opposite doors. Leo lunged forward, grabbing the rubber handles just in time to keep the chair from crashing into the metal partition, shielding his mother with his own body.

"Hold on!" Officer Davis shouted, bracing himself against the wall as the train decelerated at a terrifying, unnatural rate.

Sparks flew outside the windows as the emergency brakes locked into place, filling the air with the sharp, acrid smell of burning rubber and ozone. The automated voice over the intercom crackled to life, announcing a forced stop at an abandoned, unlisted station platform between stops.

Leo helped right the blue wheelchair, checking his mother anxiously. "Mom? Are you alright? Did the jolt hurt the baby?"

"I'm... I'm okay," she gasped, clutching her abdomen with both hands, her face ghostly pale. "Leo, the contraction... it’s happening too fast. We don't have time."

The sliding doors of the subway car parted with a slow, heavy pneumatic groan, revealing a damp, concrete platform lit only by a single flickering emergency bulb overhead. There were no stairs leading up to the street here—only a heavy iron maintenance door marked with a biohazard symbol and a numeric keypad.

Officer Miller stepped out onto the platform first, his service pistol drawn and scanning the dark corners of the abandoned station.

"Clear!" Miller called back into the car. "Davis, get them out. Now. The tunnel behind us is already being blocked by another train."

Officer Davis rushed forward, lifting the front of the blue wheelchair while Leo pushed from behind, navigating the threshold onto the cold concrete. As soon as they cleared the doorway, the subway train behind them closed its doors and accelerated back into the darkness, leaving them stranded in the damp isolation of the forgotten station.

Leo looked around wildly, shivering in his light blue polo shirt as a cold draft swept through the tunnels.

"Where are we taking her?" Leo asked, panic mounting. "There are no hospitals down here!"

Officer Davis rushed to the metal maintenance door, punching a sequence of numbers into the battered keypad while keeping one eye on the dark tunnel tunnel entrance.

"We aren't going to a hospital," Davis replied grimly, the keypad blinking green with a heavy mechanical click. "We're going into the old aqueduct system. It’s the only place they can't track the wheelchair's internal GPS."
