Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Hallway

The ear-piercing shriek of the school emergency alarm reverberated through the cinderblock walls of Lincoln Elementary, sending an immediate wave of panic through the students and staff. Red strobe lights flashed rhythmically above the lockers, painting the chaotic hallway in shades of crimson. Mrs. Gable spun around toward the classroom door, her professional composure entirely shattered by the sudden disruption.

"Everyone under your desks! Right now!" Mrs. Gable shrieked, waving her arms frantically as the other children began scrambling in sheer terror.

Jax didn't flinch. While the entire classroom descended into pandemonium, the large biker remained completely calm, his muscular frame shielding eight-year-old Leo from the surging crowd of panicked students. Jax’s dark, sharp eyes scanned the doorway, his instincts immediately picking up that this was no ordinary fire drill. The alarm system had been manually triggered from the main office near the entrance, cutting off the normal evacuation routes toward the front courtyard.

"Listen to me, Leo," Jax said in a firm, quiet voice, completely ignoring the screaming teacher and the flashing red lights around them. "We need to move, and we need to move right now. Put that photo and the paper back in your jacket pocket and keep your hand on them. Do you understand?"

Leo nodded rapidly, his big hazel eyes wide with a mix of fear and absolute trust. He tucked the precious faded photograph and the small folded paper deep inside the inner lining of his old, oversized jacket. He clutched the fabric tightly with his pale, trembling fingers.

Mrs. Gable pushed her way past a row of empty desks, her face twisted in a mixture of outrage and sheer panic as she confronted the tattooed intruder.

"You need to get out of this school this exact second!" Mrs. Gable yelled over the wailing alarm, pointing a trembling finger toward the emergency exit. "I don't know who you are or what your sick game is with this boy, but I am calling the police right now! You are trespassing on school property!"

Jax slowly rose to his full height, towering over the frantic teacher. His long dark hair fell over the shoulders of his heavy leather vest, and his jaw clenched tightly as he stared down at her with unblinking intensity. He made no aggressive move, but his sheer physical presence commanded an undeniable, terrifying authority that made Mrs. Gable instinctively take two steps backward.

"Call whoever you want, lady," Jax replied coldly, his voice remarkably steady amid the roaring alarm. "But if you try to stop us from leaving this building together, you’re going to find out the hard way why nobody messes with family."

Before Mrs. Gable could muster a response, the heavy metal fire door at the end of the hallway burst open with a loud metallic crash. Heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor, accompanied by the harsh sound of shouting voices calling out names. Two security guards in dark uniforms sprinted into view, their flashlights cutting through the dim, strobe-lit hallway as they locked eyes directly on Jax and the young boy standing beside him.

"There he is! Grab him!" one of the guards shouted, unlatching a heavy baton from his belt as they charged straight toward the classroom.

Jax grabbed Leo's hand securely in his massive palm, turning sharply toward the open classroom window that led directly out to the overgrown playground.

"Hold on tight, kid," Jax muttered, kicking the glass pane outward.

As the shattered glass rained down onto the muddy grass outside, Jax hoisted Leo up into his arms, leaping through the broken window frame just as the security guards reached the threshold.
