Chapter 5 - The Underground Pursuit and the Trapped Exit

The acrid smell of burnt wiring filled the stairwell as we descended three flights of concrete steps toward the subterranean parking garage.
Flashing red emergency lights cast long, distorted shadows against the damp walls, painting the chaos in a surreal, dystopian hue.
When we pushed through the heavy fire exit into the vast, echoing garage, the cool night air hit my face, carrying the distant wail of approaching police sirens.
A sleek black sedan idled near the far corner of the garage, its exhaust pipes puffing white clouds into the damp atmosphere.
Arthur Sterling stood beside the open passenger door, holding the leather briefcase tightly under his arm while speaking urgently into another burner phone.
"Stop right there, Arthur!" my father shouted, his voice echoing off the concrete pillars as we stepped out from the stairwell shadows.
Arthur froze, slowly turning around to face us with a chilling, unapologetic smile playing across his lips.
"Julian, you really should have retired years ago instead of playing detective with your illegitimate daughter," Arthur mocked, taking a deliberate step toward the open car door.
"You’re cornered, Arthur. The perimeter is locked down, and federal marshals are already five minutes away," I said, stepping forward with my phone raised, recording every move.
Arthur laughed, a dry, humorless sound that bounced off the low ceiling.
"Federal marshals? Maya, sweet girl, do you really think I didn't plan for this?" Arthur asked, pressing a small silver remote control in his palm.
A massive concrete support beam fifty feet to our left suddenly groaned, and with a deafening roar, a localized charge blew the base, bringing tons of rubble crashing down to block the main exit ramp.

As dust billowed around us, Arthur slipped into the sedan, but before the door could close, I lunged forward and grabbed something protruding from his pocket.
