Chapter 10 - The Federal Facility Infiltration Plan

The digital blueprint of the downtown federal holding facility glowed softly on the multi-screen monitor, casting an eerie blue light across my mother's tense face.
"We need a distraction, and we need it now," Elizabeth muttered, her fingers dancing across the mechanical keyboard as she bypassed the facility's external firewall.
"If we trigger a controlled fire alarm on the fourth floor, the internal security protocols will automatically unlock all transitional holding cells for evacuation," I suggested, leaning over the console to study the guard rotation schedule.
Elizabeth looked up at me, a flicker of fierce pride crossing her features before she nodded in agreement.
"You have your father’s analytical mind, Maya," she said, sliding a sleek, black hardware tool across the desk.
"Take this network tap. Once you access the master terminal in the warden's office, plug it into the main router to give me remote access to override the biometric locks."
Two hours later, under the cover of a heavy, rolling fog, our black town car slipped into the subterranean service bay of the federal facility disguised as a municipal maintenance van.
I pulled my dark uniform jacket tight, keeping my head down as I pushed a heavy metal janitorial cart past the sleepy front desk guard.
The air inside smelled of bleach and floor wax, every squeak of the cart's rubber wheels sounding like a gunshot in the sterile, quiet hallway.
I reached the fourth-floor corridor, swiped the stolen keycard, and slipped into the warden's office just as the shrill wail of the fire alarms began to shriek overhead.
Red emergency strobe lights flashed against the polished mahogany walls as I dropped to my knees beneath the desk and plugged the network tap into the master router.
My earpiece hissed with static before my mother’s voice broke through clearly.
"I'm in the system, Maya. Download complete," Elizabeth whispered urgently.
