Chapter 12: The Children of the Shore

Five years passed.

The Sunapee Forestry Guild grew into an internationally celebrated sanctuary for sustainable timber framing, traditional boatbuilding, and ecological watershed conservation, training over forty young apprentices every year from across the United States.

Hannah had established *The Caleb Cole Environmental Fellowship*, providing free ecological field research programs and traditional woodworking apprenticeships for underprivileged youths from industrial towns across New England.

David served as the master structural designer and lead joinery instructor at the academy.

On a warm, sunny morning in June, the boat shop was alive with the sweet fragrance of fresh cedar shavings and the sound of children's laughter.

Sitting in a pile of clean pine shavings was four-year-old Caleb—David and Hannah’s son—named in memory of the great-grandfather who had first laid the granite boundary stone.

Little Caleb wore tiny denim overalls, holding a small wooden sanding block, carefully polishing the rounded hull of a toy wooden dory David had carved for him from scrap cherry wood.

""Daddy! Look!"" Caleb shouted, holding up the toy boat with both hands. ""No splinters! It’s ready for the water!""

David knelt down in the shavings, taking the toy with his large, calloused hands, inspecting the wood with a proud, loving grin.

""That is master-grade joinery, Caleb,"" David smiled, kissing the boy's forehead. ""Just like your mother frames her timber.""

Hannah walked into the shop carrying a basket of fresh red strawberries from the garden, her face glowing with radiant, enduring health. She leaned against the heavy maple workbench, resting her hand over her abdomen where their second child was growing beneath the warm morning light.

Her soul was completely at peace.
