Chapter 14: The Vigil of the Hearth

On a clear, warm evening in late September, when the autumn dusk was painting the sky in shades of violet, amber, and molten gold, Martha and Ryan walked out to the edge of the western pasture.
Down in the valley, the sparkling waters of the river flowed peacefully past the thriving green forests, reflecting the evening sky in endless shimmering ripples.
The warm incandescent lights of the apprentice cottages flickered on, casting a golden glow across the gardens where young foresters were sharing evening supper on the timber porch.
Ryan wrapped his strong arm around his mother’s shoulders, pulling her close against the cooling evening air.
Martha leaned her head against his shoulder, listening to the steady, unhurried rhythm of his breathing and the deep, eternal silence of the ancient hills.
""Do you remember the morning the lawyer sent the envelope, Mom?"" Ryan asked softly, watching the first evening stars appear over the mountain ridges.
""I remember every second, Ryan,"" Martha replied gently, touching his calloused hand.
""I was so terrified of losing what I thought was mine,"" Ryan whispered, touching the white oak ring on his finger. ""I didn't know that I had never truly owned anything.""
Martha turned to him gently, looking into his clear, honest eyes with unshakeable maternal reverence.

""You were just asleep, Ryan,"" Martha said softly. ""Your father’s letter was the alarm that woke you up to the light.""
