Chapter 11: The Children of the Ridge

Five years passed.

The Western Ridge Farm expanded to include *The Arthur Vance Apprenticeship School for Regenerative Agriculture*—a non-profit vocational sanctuary providing free, accredited training in sustainable agroforestry, traditional heavy-timber carpentry, and soil conservation for young adults aging out of the rural foster care system across the Appalachian region.

Over forty apprentices lived on the ridge every year, studying in light-filled timber classrooms, working in the tree nurseries, and learning how to restore abandoned farmland across Virginia.

Ryan served as the master instructor of silviculture and soil restoration, his life transformed into an unceasing, joyful offering of service to the earth and the community.

On a warm, sunny morning in June, the timber workshop beside the barn was alive with the sweet scent of cedar shavings, beeswax, and the sound of children's laughter.

Sitting in a pile of clean pine shavings was five-year-old Arthur—Ryan and Courtney’s son—wearing tiny denim overalls, holding a small wooden sanding block, carefully polishing the rounded hull of a toy wooden tractor Ryan had shaped for him from scrap cherry wood.

Beside him sat nine-year-old Clara, her dark hair woven with wild clover, patiently showing her little brother how to smooth the edges with sandpaper.

""Look, Grandma Martha!"" Arthur shouted, holding up the toy with both hands. ""No rough spots! It’s ready to roll!""

Martha Vance, now seventy-seven, knelt down slowly in the shavings, taking the toy with her gentle, spotted hands, inspecting the wood with a proud, loving grin.

""That is master-grade woodwork, Arthur,"" Martha smiled, gently kissing his forehead. ""Just like your father builds his fences.""

Courtney walked into the workshop carrying a basket of fresh red strawberries from the garden, her face glowing with radiant, enduring health. She leaned against the heavy maple workbench, resting her hand over her husband’s shoulder, watching their children beneath the warm morning light.

Her soul was completely, unshakeably at peace.
