Chapter 7: The Dawn of Reckoning

The morning sun cast a cold, pale light across the courthouse steps. The air was crisp, carrying the sharp bite of late autumn. Leo walked beside Richard, his small hand firmly enclosed within his uncle’s warm grip. He wore the same gray suit and tie, but today his posture was different—there was no frantic panic in his large eyes, only a resolute, quiet bravery. Behind them walked Martha, her head held high, clutching a worn leather-bound ledger containing decades of quiet observations and damning household records.
As they entered the wood-paneled courtroom, a heavy hush fell over the gallery. Beatrice sat at the defense table, flanked by two high-priced corporate attorneys in sharp, pinstriped suits. Julian sat beside her, looking pale and nervous, fidgeting constantly with his gold signet ring. When Julian caught sight of Leo and Richard walking down the center aisle, his eyes flashed with brief panic before he quickly masked it behind an arrogant smirk.
The elderly judge entered from chambers, his black robes sweeping across the dais as he took his seat. He tapped his gavel once, restoring absolute silence.
""Counsel,"" the judge began, his deep voice carrying effortlessly across the room. ""We reconvene for closing arguments and final sentencing regarding the charges against Clara Miller. Has the defense any final statements, or is the prosecution ready to rest its case?""
Richard stepped forward before Beatrice's lead attorney could rise, holding a small manila folder and a secure digital tablet. ""Your Honor, we move for an emergency reopening of evidentiary hearings based on newly discovered, indisputable physical and testimonial evidence that completely exonerates the defendant.""
Beatrice’s lead attorney bolted upright, his face flushing with indignation. ""Objection, Your Honor! This is entirely irregular and violates procedural timelines. The defense is merely grasping at straws to delay a foregone conclusion.""
The judge raised a single wrinkled hand, silencing the lawyer instantly. ""Under normal circumstances, counsel would be correct. However, given the gravity of the charges and the compelling nature of yesterday's courtroom outburst by the minor witness, the court finds sufficient grounds to review the supplementary material. Proceed, Mr. Richard.""
Richard walked toward the clerk's desk, handing over the portable flash drive and Martha's handwritten ledger. ""We have obtained the unedited analog security footage from the estate's secondary archive, corroborated by the direct testimony of the estate's head housekeeper, who witnessed the altercation firsthand.""
A collective murmur rippled through the gallery. Beatrice turned her head sharply toward Martha, her eyes narrowing into cold daggers of betrayal. Julian swallowed hard, his hands trembling visibly on the wooden table.

""Play the footage,"" the judge ordered calmly.
