Chapter 6: Sanctuary and Strategy

The heavy wooden door of Richard’s downtown apartment clicked shut, and the heavy deadbolt slid into place with a reassuring thud. The apartment was modest compared to the sprawling ancestral estate—filled with tall bookshelves, warm lamps, and the comforting scent of old paper and roasted coffee. Leo sat on the edge of the living room sofa, still wearing the slightly wrinkled gray suit, his small legs swinging nervously above the floor.
Richard walked over to his vintage mahogany desk, plugged the flash drive into his laptop, and watched the video file load on the screen. The grainy black-and-white images played smoothly, confirming that the export was complete and uncorrupted.
""We have it,"" Richard breathed, leaning back in his leather desk chair and rubbing his eyes with thumb and forefinger. ""The complete, unedited sequence. It clearly shows Julian initiating the physical confrontation and pushing Clara over the banister.""
Leo slid off the sofa and walked over to the desk, peering up at the screen. ""Does this mean Clara can come back home tomorrow?""
""It means we have a fighting chance,"" Richard corrected gently, placing a hand on the boy's shoulder. ""Tomorrow morning, before the judge issues his final verdict, we will present this file directly to the court through an emergency motion of newly discovered evidence. However, Beatrice will not sit quietly. She will try every legal trick in the book to have it dismissed. We need someone inside the household who can testify about Julian's actions right before the incident—someone who heard the argument firsthand.""
Leo furrowed his brow. ""Who else was there? Everyone else was downstairs in the ballroom.""
""Not everyone,"" a quiet, hesitant voice spoke from the hallway doorway.
Both Richard and Leo turned sharply. Standing in the shadow of the archway was Martha, the elderly head housekeeper who had served the family for over forty years. Her hands were folded neatly over her crisp white apron, and her eyes held a heavy, sorrowful weight. For decades, Martha had kept the secrets of the estate, bending to the will of the formidable Beatrice out of fear of losing her livelihood and her home. But tonight, something inside her had finally broken.
""Martha?"" Richard asked, rising slowly from his chair. ""What are you doing here?""
""I took a taxi after you left the manor,"" Martha replied, her voice steadying as she stepped into the warm light of the room. ""I saw Beatrice chase you into the basement, Mr. Richard. And... I couldn't keep silent any longer. I'm an old woman, and I have lived my entire life carrying other people's sins, but I refuse to watch an innocent young girl go to prison for a crime masterminded by a spoiled coward.""
Leo ran across the room and impulsively hugged Martha around the waist. The old woman looked down in surprise, her stern face softening as she placed a gentle, trembling hand on the boy's short brown hair.
""What do you know, Martha?"" Richard asked softly, pulling up a chair for her.

""I was standing right behind the study door when Master Julian cornered Clara,"" Martha began, her voice gaining strength. ""I heard him demand the necklace back, threatening to ruin her family if she didn't take the blame for the missing cash he stole. Clara refused. She told him honesty was worth more than his father's money. That's when he lost his temper and shoved her. I wrote it all down in my ledger that very night.""
