Chapter 5: The Confrontation in the Dark

Beatrice stood in the doorway, her tall, elegant silhouette framed by the dim light of the basement corridor. She wore a tailored charcoal coat, her silver-streaked hair pulled back into a severe chignon that accentuated the sharp angles of her face. Her eyes swept over the antique console, the glowing monitor, and the small boy standing beside it, her expression hardening from mild curiosity into freezing fury.

""Richard,"" she said, her voice dropping an octave into a dangerous register. ""Have you completely lost your mind? Playing detective in the basement like a pair of common thieves. Turn that machine off right now.""

Richard stood up slowly from the metal swivel chair, placing himself between Beatrice and the computer monitor. His frame was tall, but Beatrice possessed an unyielding, domineering presence that had cowed the entire family for decades.

""We aren't playing games, Beatrice,"" Richard said steadily, his voice remarkably calm despite the racing of his pulse. ""We are simply looking at the truth. The truth you tried so desperately to bury by framing an innocent young woman.""

Beatrice let out a sharp, derisive laugh that held no humor. ""Innocent? That girl is a clumsy thief who thought she could steal family heirlooms and escape accountability. Julian was merely trying to stop her from fleeing the premises when the accident occurred. The police report is filed, the statements are logged, and the trial concludes tomorrow morning. This pathetic little crusade of yours will accomplish nothing except dragging our family name through the mud.""

""Julian pushed her,"" Leo shouted suddenly, stepping out from behind Richard with his small fists clenched at his sides. His lower lip trembled, but his eyes flashed with genuine courage. ""I saw him! And the machine recorded every single second of it! You can't hide it anymore, Aunt Beatrice!""

Beatrice’s gaze snapped down to the boy, a look of profound contempt crossing her features. ""You are a foolish, impressionable child manipulated by a weak man who has always envied our success,"" she hissed, taking a step forward into the room. ""You know nothing of how the real world works, Leo. Power protects its own. It always has.""

Before Beatrice could lunge toward the console to rip the cables from the wall, Richard moved with decisive speed. He slammed his hand down on the export confirmation key, grabbed the portable flash drive from the interface slot, and scooped Leo up into his arms in one fluid motion.

""Get out of my way, Beatrice,"" Richard warned, his voice ringing with a cold authority that startled even his sister.

Beatrice lunged for them, her manicured fingers catching only the sleeve of Richard's coat as he sidestepped her with athletic grace. Charging past her into the dark corridor, Richard sprinted toward the basement stairs, carrying Leo tightly against his chest as the distant echoes of Beatrice’s furious shouts faded behind them.
