The Unraveling of Bianca

Bianca froze, the color draining completely from her face. The leather handbag slipped from her manicured fingers, landing in the mud and spilling stacks of rubber-banded hundred-dollar bills and forged legal affidavits across the wet grass.

"Elena?" Bianca stammered, backing away toward the trees. "I... I just came to check on Mia. I brought some money for her medication..."

"With forged trust liquidation waivers signed in your brother's name eight months after his funeral?" Elena asked, walking down the porch steps and picking up the water-damaged documents with latex gloves. "You’re an accessory to grand larceny, securities fraud, and witness tampering, Bianca."

"It was Father!" Bianca cried out, breaking down into hysterical, ugly sobs as two officers gripped her arms and secured steel cuffs behind her back. "Father said David’s money belonged to the family business! He said Leah was nobody—that she was just a common nurse who would waste the estate on doctors!"

Leah stepped out onto the porch, holding five-year-old Mia against her hip.

Mia buried her face in Leah’s neck, hiding from the sight of the flashing lights.

Bianca looked up from the mud, her eyes red and streaming with mascara, catching Leah’s gaze. "Leah... please... tell them! I never wanted Father to hit you! I just wanted to save my store!"

Leah looked at the woman who had spent four years wearing five-hundred-dollar shoes bought with her dying child’s medical funds. There was no hatred in Leah’s heart—only a profound, cold pity for a soul that had been poisoned by greed until it could no longer recognize the value of human life.

"Your store was built on a little girl's breath, Bianca," Leah said softly. "It was never yours to save."
