The Cost of Rain / Chapter 12 / 15

The Unbroken Name

That autumn, on the second anniversary of the night she left the Oakridge estate, Leah received a formal package from the Commonwealth Vital Records Registry.

She sat at her desk in the sanctuary office, looking out at the golden leaves drifting down onto the creek, and broke the blue wax seal.

The document was an official decree of name restoration:

* Leah Linwood.

* Mia Linwood.

The name of Vance was gone from their records, erased like a bad dream after the sun rises.

Mia bounded into the office carrying a large piece of heavy watercolor paper. "Mommy! Look what I made for the front gate!"

Leah took the artwork. It was a beautiful watercolor painting of a large wooden house with smoking chimneys, surrounded by green mountains and an open wooden gate.

Written across the top in neat, bold letters was the motto Mia had dictated to her teacher:

May you like

> "The door is open. The rain cannot reach you here."

Leah felt a warm tear trace the path of the old, faded scar on her cheek—not a tear of sorrow, but the sweet, pure release of a promise fulfilled. She framed the painting in raw cedarwood and mounted it beside the main entrance of the lodge, where every child arriving at the sanctuary could read it before stepping inside.
