The Sanctuary of Cedar Creek

Forty miles north of the suburbs, where the paved avenues gave way to winding gravel lanes and towering Douglas firs, sat the township of Cedar Creek.

At 1:30 AM, Leah pulled the sputtering station wagon into the gravel drive of a small, cedar-shingled cottage nestled beneath the pines. The windows glowed with warm amber light through the storm.

Before Leah could even unbuckle her seatbelt, the front porch door swung open.

Nora Linwood—Leah’s maternal aunt, a retired rural physician with silver-streaked dark hair and sharp, compassionate hazel eyes—hurried down the wooden steps holding a massive black umbrella.

"Leah! Good God, child!" Nora threw open the car door, her gaze taking in Leah’s split lip, the bruising cheekbone, and the shivering child in the backseat.

Without asking a single question, Nora scooped Mia into her arms beneath the umbrella and guided Leah up the porch stairs into the warmth of the cottage.

The air inside smelled of pine needles, roasted coffee, and beeswax. A wood-burning cast-iron stove crackled in the living room, throwing dancing shadows across hand-knitted wool rugs and shelves lined with medical texts and botanical jars.

Nora set Mia on the plush sofa, wrapping her in a heavy fleece quilt, then turned immediately to Leah. With steady, clinical hands, she cleaned the cut on Leah’s cheek with antiseptic, applied a sterile butterfly closure to the lip, and examined the bruising along her jawline.

"A blunt force impact," Nora said, her voice trembling with suppressed fury. "Harold?"

"He wanted the medical insurance check," Leah whispered, accepting a mug of hot chamomile tea. "Bianca's boutique in the city is going under, and Harold promised her sixty thousand dollars from the family account. When he discovered the money was locked in a restricted trust solely for Mia’s lung surgeries, he lost his mind."

Nora set her medical kit aside and sat beside Leah, placing a warm, calloused hand over hers.

"The Vance dynasty has ruled that county for forty years with bribes, intimidation, and broken promises," Nora said softly. "They think every person has a price. But you are not alone anymore, Leah. This house is a fortress, and tomorrow morning, the law comes to Cedar Creek."
