Chapter 6

The metallic scent of antiseptic hung heavy in the air as Special Prosecutor Sarah Vance stepped closer to the hospital bed. David blinked against the sudden introduction of a stranger into his private misery, his hand instinctively tightening around Valeria’s fingers.

“A flash drive?” David repeated, his voice strained. “I didn't know there was a safe in the master suite that she had access to. It was installed behind the wainscoting before we married, but the combination was supposed to be restricted to my thumbprint.”

Special Prosecutor Vance opened the thick manila folder, sliding out a single glossy photograph of a small, encrypted black device with a red serial number etched into its casing.

“Biometric locks can be bypassed when you leave your tablet unlocked on the nightstand while taking a sleeping aid, Mr. Sterling,” the prosecutor stated matter-of-factly, her tone devoid of sympathy but dripping with professional urgency. “Our cyber-crime division recovered this from the floorboards of the kitchen service exit at L’Aura restaurant just twenty minutes ago, after Tyler dropped it while fleeing the premises.”

Julian stepped forward, resting his hands on the metal footboard of the bed. “What is stored on that drive, Counsel?”

“Corporate espionage, Mr. Sterling,” Vance replied, locking eyes with the older man. “It contains the proprietary architectural designs for your firm’s upcoming downtown revitalization project, along with encrypted communication logs proving that Elena was selling those blueprints to your primary commercial rival, Harrison Thorne, six months before she filed for divorce.”

The room seemed to tilt on its axis. Valeria gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. The downtown revitalization project was her father’s legacy—a multi-million-dollar green space and historical preservation initiative that represented the culmination of Julian’s entire career. If Harrison Thorne acquired those designs ahead of the public bidding deadline, Sterling Development would face catastrophic financial ruin and potential antitrust litigation.

David tried to sit up, the monitor beside him beeping in warning as his heart rate spiked. “No… that’s impossible. Elena didn’t know anything about the zoning clearances. She hated my work; she called it dry and boring!”

“She didn’t need to understand the zoning laws, David,” Valeria said, her voice trembling slightly as the full, terrifying scope of Elena’s betrayal came into focus. “She only needed to know who was willing to pay for the master blueprints. Thorne has been trying to acquire that block for five years.”

Prosecutor Vance tapped the photograph against her palm. “Mr. Sterling, this flash drive changes the nature of your divorce proceedings entirely. This isn't just an ugly asset division anymore. This is a federal criminal conspiracy. And because your name is still legally tied to several of the holding accounts used to launder the payoff funds, you are currently listed as a co-conspirator.”

David stared at the prosecutor, the color draining entirely from his face. The reality of what Elena had engineered hit him like a physical blow—she hadn't just left him; she had systematically framed him to take the fall for corporate sabotage if her extraction plan failed.

Julian’s face hardened into a mask of cold, unyielding granite. The grandfatherly warmth vanished, replaced by the ruthless acumen of a man who had built an empire from the ground up and protected it against every shark in the city.

“Get me my legal team,” Julian instructed without turning around, his voice dropping into an ice-cold register that brooked no argument. “And call Harrison Thorne. Tell him I want to meet him at his office in one hour. If he thinks he’s holding a winning hand, it’s time to show him the house is built on sand.”

Valeria watched her father, feeling a shiver run down her spine. The gloves were off, and the real war was about to begin.
