Chapter 3

The sudden arrival of the young man shattered the remaining fragments of Elena’s fragile composure. It was Tyler, the flashy twenty-eight-year-old cryptocurrency enthusiast whom Elena had left Julian for three days ago, abandoning a twenty-year marriage for the promise of fast cash and reckless luxury.

“Elena! Thank God!” Tyler panted, ignoring the upscale clientele staring in open shock. He grabbed her bare arm, his fingers digging in with unpolished urgency. “The accounts are locked. All of them. The SEC froze the primary wallet, and the apartment lease bounced. We need cash right now, or the landlord is throwing our bags on the curb!”

The restaurant erupted into a low murmur of whispered gossip. Elena tried to yank her arm away, her face contorting with sheer panic as she realized the humiliating spectacle she had orchestrated had just been completely upstaged by her own catastrophic life choices.

“Tyler, shut up!” Elena hissed, her voice rising an octave in sheer desperation. “We are in public!”

“I don’t care about public!” Tyler shot back, his eyes wide and bloodshot, completely devoid of the smooth charm he had flashed during their secret weekend getaways. “Your divorce settlement hasn't cleared yet, and your lawyer is dodging my calls! You told me this guy—” Tyler pointed a shaky finger blindly toward Julian—“was going to bail us out if we cornered him!”

Valeria watched the unfolding trainwreck with a cool, detached sadness. She reached down, picked up her leather portfolio from the adjacent chair, and smoothed down her green top. The contrast between Elena’s desperate scramble and Valeria’s absolute serenity was absolute.

Julian didn’t smile, nor did he gloat. Men of Julian’s stature didn’t need to kick an adversary who had already driven themselves off a cliff. He simply looked at Tyler, then back to Elena, recognizing the exact brand of reckless entitlement that had poisoned his household for the last five years of his marriage to her—wait, no, Elena wasn't Julian's wife, she was...

Let's clarify the record: Elena was Julian’s former daughter-in-law, having been married to Julian’s estranged younger son, David, before filing for a bitter, high-conflict divorce that had drained David’s accounts and left the family name dragged through the local tabloids. Julian had been supporting David through the fallout, and Valeria was Julian’s daughter from his first marriage, acting as a pillar of legal and emotional support.

Elena’s betrayal hadn't been leaving Julian; it had been destroying David, bankrupting the family foundation’s subsidiary, and walking away with millions in ill-gotten assets while leaving David on the brink of ruin. And now, those millions were evaporating faster than morning mist.

“Looking for a bailout, Tyler?” Julian asked, his voice cutting through the whining of the younger man like a scalpel. “You picked the wrong table. My son’s accounts might have been drained by your legal team’s aggressive predatory clauses, but the courts are reviewing the forensic audits as of this morning.”

Elena froze. The light grey designer handbag slipped from her slack fingers, hitting the Italian marble floor with a dull, heavy thud.

“What… what did you say?” Elena whispered, her eyes locking onto Julian’s unblinking gaze.

Valeria turned toward the exit, pausing just long enough to look back over her shoulder, her gold hoop earrings catching the light one last time.

“The forensic audit was filed at nine a.m., Elena,” Valeria said quietly. “Every single asset you transferred offshore has been flagged as stolen corporate capital. You don't have a divorce settlement anymore. You have a federal subpoena.”
