Chapter 1

The ambient murmur of L’Aura, an upscale downtown restaurant known for its cascading crystal chandeliers and exorbitant wine list, suddenly plummeted into a suffocating vacuum of silence. Elena stood rigidly behind the crisp linen-clothed table, her maroon sleeveless dress hugging her frame like a second skin. Her dark hair was swept up into a sleek, unforgiving chignon, framing a face twisted by a bitter smirk. In her left hand, she clutched a light grey designer handbag—a trophy of sorts, purchased during her marriage to Julian, a man she had discarded precisely seventy-two hours ago under the cold neon lights of a courthouse.
Across the table sat Valeria, her short reddish-brown hair catching the amber glow of the wall sconces. Valeria wore a crisp white blazer over a soft green top, her gold hoop earrings catching the light as she kept her gaze deliberately locked on her water glass. Beside her, Julian—a distinguished grey-haired man in a dark blazer, blue button-down shirt, and a neatly folded silk pocket square—froze mid-breath. Julian’s hand hovered over the bread basket, his knuckles pale.
Elena’s voice cut through the heavy air, pitched just low enough to vibrate with malicious intimacy.
“Three days divorced and already found a rich older man?”
Valeria did not flinch, though a muscle in her jaw ticked rhythmically. She kept her eyes lowered, refusing to grant Elena the satisfaction of a panicked reaction.
Elena shifted her weight, turning slightly toward Julian’s companion, Julian’s business associate Julian had brought along. A handsome blonde-haired man in a grey suit jacket and beige collared shirt stepped up beside her. Elena reached out, her fingers glittering with a heavy diamond bracelet as she rested a manicured hand casually against the man's arm.
“Careful, sir,” Elena purred, her tone dripping with feigned concern. “Valeria is very good at looking innocent.”
The blonde man in the grey suit blinked, his professional composure faltering for a fraction of a second as he glanced between Elena and Valeria. The silence in the dining room swelled, thick enough to choke on, as every patron at neighboring tables held their breath, sensing the catastrophic social collision unfolding in real-time.
Valeria finally raised her head. Her eyes were devastatingly calm, devoid of the defensive fury Elena had clearly traveled across the city to provoke. She took a slow, measured breath, letting the tension build to a breaking point before she slowly pushed her chair back from the table.
Julian’s chest heaved beneath his dark blazer. The older man stood up slowly, deliberately adjusting the lapels of his jacket. His eyes bypassed Elena entirely, fixing instead on the blonde man in the grey suit standing frozen by her side.
“To avoid further confusion,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying, icy calm, “this is my daughter.”

Elena’s triumphant smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a sudden, sickening look of absolute horror as the blonde man in the grey suit dropped her arm.
