Chapter 15 - The Final Blueprint

The heavy iron hatch lay twisted and smoking on the white-tiled floor, wrenched entirely off its hydraulic hinges by an unseen force lurking in the abyss below. Dr. Vance lunged forward with the heavy steel crowbar raised high, his face contorted into a mask of desperate fury as he prepared to slam the seal back down over the opening.
"Get back!" Dr. Vance roared, swinging the iron bar downward with all his might.
Before the blow could land, a figure surged upward from the dark opening—broad-shouldered, clad in shredded hospital linens, and bearing skin that had fused entirely with a crystalline grey mineral remarkably similar to the plaster encasing Leo’s hands. The figure caught the descending crowbar with one bare, hardened hand, stopping the heavy steel dead in its tracks with a dull, resonant clang.
Maya screamed, covering her face and dropping to her knees against the supply cart. Leo stared in paralyzed horror as the figure stepped fully into the harsh fluorescent light of the laboratory, revealing a face half-swallowed by the same grey, calcified growth that lined the sub-basement walls. It wasn't a monster from a nightmare; it was a former colleague of Dr. Vance’s—Dr. Aris, who had vanished from the faculty directory nearly two years ago.
"You can't bury the progress, Thomas," Aris rasped, his voice sounding like grinding stones as he looked directly at Dr. Vance with dull, silver-hued eyes. "The integration is complete. We are the future of human cognition, whether you want to admit it or not."
Dr. Vance stumbled backward, dropping the crowbar as the terrifying reality of his own unchecked ambition collided with him physically. The experimental formula hadn't just stored data; it had permanently altered biological tissue, turning human beings into living monuments to a science that had crossed every conceivable moral boundary.
Leo yanked his arms upward with one final, desperate burst of adrenaline. The sudden movement, combined with the structural vibration of the room, caused the brittle plaster around his right wrist to finally fracture completely. With a sharp crack, his hand broke free from the hardened shell, bleeding and raw, but mobile once more.

Without a second thought, Leo reached down, grabbed the black encrypted flash drive off the steel table, and dove toward the heavy oak door. He turned the key in the deadbolt with his free hand, throwing the portal wide open just as campus security sirens began to wail in the courtyard below.
As Leo stumbled out into the cool morning air, clutching the key to the entire operation in his bloodied palm, he looked back one last time. Maya was kneeling beside her father in the dust of the ruined lab, while Dr. Aris stepped forward to close the hatch behind them—leaving the secrets of the sub-basement sealed beneath the floorboards forever, yet leaving the truth permanently exposed to the rising light of day.
