Chapter 11 - The Rattle of the Handle

The brass knob jiggled violently within its socket as the security guard tested the deadbolt a second time, applying enough pressure to make the heavy oak door shudder slightly in its frame. Inside the sterile laboratory, the silence was absolute. Even the leaky sink faucet seemed to have stopped its rhythmic dripping, holding its breath in tandem with the three people trapped inside.
"Dr. Vance? Are you still running diagnostics in there?" a muffled voice called out through the frosted glass panel. It was Officer Miller, the veteran night watchman who knew every student and faculty member by face. "The master system shows an active biometric override on your sub-basement access terminal."
Maya looked at her father, her face drained of all color, her lips parted in silent panic. If Miller forced the exterior latch or radioed the main desk for a maintenance crowbar, their entire operation would be exposed in less than two minutes.
Dr. Vance didn't flinch. With agonizing slowness, he raised his voice just enough to carry through the heavy wood, pitching his tone into a calm, unbothered register that sounded as if he were sitting behind his desk grading midterms.
"Everything is under control, Miller," Dr. Vance called back smoothly, leaning slightly against the edge of the examination table where Leo lay pinned. "I’m wrapping up a late-stage calibration on the neural interface unit. One of our graduate students is assisting with the sensor array."
Outside the door, there was a brief pause. The shadow shifted slightly against the frosted glass.
"At two in the morning, Doctor?" Officer Miller asked, skepticism evident in his raspy voice. "The dean issued a campus-wide memo last week restricting unauthorized lab access past midnight unless accompanied by formal departmental sign-off."
"I am the head of the department, Miller," Dr. Vance replied, his voice hardening just a fraction, injecting the full weight of his authority into the command. "And my authorization covers whatever hours are necessary to complete institutional research. You can log my override under my permanent faculty credentials and continue your rounds."
Another agonizing moment passed. The handle stopped rattling. The shadow against the glass lingered for a heartbeat longer before shifting sideways, replaced by the steady, receding squeak of rubber-soled shoes marching back down the corridor toward the central stairwell.
Leo let out a long, shuddering exhale that sounded like a deflating tire. His shoulders slumped against the cold metal table, the immediate danger having passed, leaving behind the crushing reality of his imprisonment.

Dr. Vance turned his gaze back down to Leo, his expression cold and calculating as he reached slowly into his coat pocket once more.
