Chapter 4

The bell above the wooden door chimed softly as Maya and Uncle Chen stepped into the warm, fragrant interior of a small, family-owned herbal tea shop. The air was thick with the calming scents of dried ginseng, jasmine, and roasted barley. Shelves lined the walls from floor to ceiling, filled with glass jars, ceramic pots, and bundles of medicinal roots. An elderly woman with silver hair tied in a neat bun hurried out from behind the bamboo counter, her face registering immediate alarm as she saw Uncle Chen’s damp jacket and exhausted expression.
"Chen! What happened to you?" the woman asked anxiously, rushing forward to help guide him toward a comfortable wicker chair near a small electric heater.
"I am fine, Lin," Uncle Chen murmured, sinking gratefully into the cushions. "This kind young woman pulled me out of a very bad situation."
Lin turned her sharp, intelligent eyes toward Maya, taking in the blue utility vest, the martial arts physique, and the calm, grounded demeanor. She bowed her head slightly in deep respect. "Thank you for protecting him. My name is Lin. This shop has been here for forty years, but the neighborhood is changing for the worse. Vultures are circling."
Maya nodded, pulling out the water-damaged leather ledger from her vest and placing it gently on the wooden table between them. "I think this ledger explains exactly how those vultures operate."
Lin gasped softly as she recognized the distinctive red ink markings on the cover. She looked up at Maya with a mixture of fear and reluctant hope. "The Vanguard Group. They have been forcing small businesses to sign away their property titles under the guise of emergency financial relief. My brother’s bakery was taken last month. When he protested, they burned his delivery van."
Maya pulled up a wooden stool and sat down across from them, resting her elbows on her knees. "They rely on fear to enforce compliance. But fear only works when people feel completely isolated. We need to find everyone whose name is listed in this book."
Uncle Chen leaned forward, holding a steaming cup of ginger tea that Lin had just handed him. "There are dozens of names, Maya. Street vendors, dry cleaners, small restaurant owners. Most of them are immigrants who don't know how to navigate the legal system, or they are too afraid of retaliation from the local police, who are often in the pockets of the syndicates."
"Then we don't rely on the broken system," Maya said firmly. "We build a network of mutual defense. If they want to intimidate people one by one, we unite them."

Lin looked at Maya with deep admiration, though a shadow of caution remained in her eyes. "You are brave, child, but the men behind the Vanguard Group are ruthless. They have money, muscle, and corrupt politicians on speed dial. One martial artist cannot fight an entire corporation."
"I am not planning to fight them alone," Maya replied quietly, tapping the cover of the ledger. "I have a plan, and it starts with returning these stolen titles to their rightful owners."
