Despite the arrests and public disgrace, the Vanguard Group’s legal team launched a final, desperate counter-offensive, attempting to push through a massive forced eviction notice for the entire historical block under an obscure municipal redevelopment clause. Maya knew that cutting off the head of the corporate snake was not enough; the legal paperwork itself had to be dismantled from the inside out. Accompanied by Kai and Inspector Miller, Maya walked through the grand double doors of the downtown municipal planning commission building, stepping into the cavernous marble-pillared boardroom where the final emergency zoning vote was scheduled to take place.
Seated at the long mahogany table were city commissioners who had long profited from real estate kickbacks, looking visibly nervous as reporters crowded the gallery seating behind them. At the head of the table sat Richard Vance’s chief legal counsel, a sharp, polished corporate attorney named Sterling, who maintained an arrogant smirk despite his employer’s recent arrest.
"This commission has no business entertaining unscheduled interruptions," Sterling stated smoothly as Maya and her companions walked down the central aisle. "The redevelopment permits were signed and filed according to standard municipal protocol months ago. The vote is merely a procedural formality."
Maya stepped up to the podium, her presence commanding absolute silence in the grand room. She wore her blue utility vest over a clean black shirt, a quiet reminder of the streets she fought to protect. She placed a single, thick folder on the polished wooden podium.
"Procedural formality based on forged signatures and coerced property titles," Maya said, her voice carrying effortlessly across the large room without a hint of hesitation.
Sterling scoffed, leaning back in his leather chair. "Baseless accusations from a street-level agitator. You have no legal standing in this room."
"I have the original signed affidavits of every single property owner on that block," Maya replied calmly, opening the folder to reveal meticulous documentation compiled by Kai and verified by the Attorney General's office. "Furthermore, state investigators have confirmed that the redevelopment clause you are invoking was amended illegally through bribery and wire fraud."
Inspector Miller stepped forward, flashing her state badge for the official record. "Any commissioner voting in favor of this eviction today will be co-signing a federal criminal conspiracy indictment. I suggest you vote accordingly."
