Chapter 5

Dawn broke over the suburban neighborhood with a pale, washed-out light that offered little warmth. Claire sat at the kitchen table with a legal pad and a pen, surrounded by past-due notices, bank statements, and collection letters that Mark had hidden in the back of the pantry. The numbers were staggering, a mountain of high-interest debt accumulated through underground medical bills, gym fees, and compounding penalties from shady lenders.

Mark walked into the kitchen, wearing a clean shirt but looking as though he hadn't slept a wink. The boxing gloves were gone, tucked away in the trunk of his car, but the tension in his posture remained unchanged. He poured a cup of black coffee and sat down opposite Claire, his gaze dropping to the paperwork spread across the table.

"It's worse than you thought, isn't it?" Mark asked, his voice gravelly and low.

"It's manageable, provided we liquidate the savings bonds my father left me and sell the second car," Claire said without looking up from her calculations. Her pen moved swiftly across the paper, crossing out unnecessary expenses with ruthless efficiency. "It won't pay off Vince in full, but it will buy us enough leverage to demand an audit of the ledger. If they've been charging us illegal interest rates, we have legal recourse."

Mark scoffed, leaning back in his chair. "The law doesn't reach Vince, Claire. You're talking about loan sharks, not the IRS."

"The law reaches anyone who operates a cash business out of an unpermitted warehouse," Claire countered, finally looking up, her dark eyes locking onto his. "I spent yesterday afternoon talking to a colleague whose brother is a forensic accountant for the state attorney general's office. He took a look at the receipts you kept. Vince isn't just running a gambling ring; he's running a massive tax evasion scheme. The moment we threaten to hand those ledgers to the state, Vince won't care about collecting your debt. He'll care about staying out of a federal penitentiary."

Mark stared at her in stunned silence. The sheer strategy of her counterattack caught him entirely off guard. He had spent his entire life solving problems with his fists, never realizing that the greatest weapon in the room was sitting quietly across the kitchen table. The realization brought a strange, humbling sense of relief.
