Chapter 13

The city lights twinkled like scattered diamonds across the evening skyline as Claire and Mark stood on the small balcony of their new apartment. A gentle autumn breeze carried the distant sounds of traffic and laughter from the street below. Inside, Lily was fast asleep in her new bedroom, surrounded by boxes she had finally finished unpacking.
Mark rested his arms on the metal railing, looking out over the twinkling lights. He took a deep, slow breath, feeling the cool night air fill his lungs. Claire stepped up beside him, wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her head against his broad shoulder.
"Do you ever think about the old house?" Claire asked softly, breaking the comfortable silence.
"Sometimes," Mark admitted, turning slightly to look down at her. "Mostly I just think about how close I came to losing everything because I was too proud to ask for help, and too blind to see what was right in front of me."
"We all make mistakes, Mark," Claire said, her voice filled with gentle understanding. "What matters is how we pick up the pieces. We didn't just survive; we grew stronger."
Mark pulled her closer, resting his chin on top of her brown hair. "I couldn't have done it without you. You stood your ground when everyone else would have run. You're the strongest person I've ever known."

"We're a team," Claire corrected, looking up into his eyes with a warm, unwavering gaze. "A team doesn't win because one person carries the whole weight. A team wins because both people refuse to let go."
The balcony was bathed in a soft, amber glow from the interior living room light. The shadows of the past had completely dissolved, replaced by the quiet promise of a future built on honesty, mutual respect, and unconditional love. They stood together in the cool night air, watching the city pulse with life around them, completely at peace.
