Chapter 4

The kitchen was dark save for the pale illumination of the open refrigerator. Claire stood by the counter, nursing a glass of tap water while Mark paced the linoleum floor, his heavy boots clicking rhythmically against the tiles. Lily had finally fallen asleep upstairs, exhausted by the emotional turbulence of the evening. The silence of the house felt fragile, like thin ice over deep water.
"I can talk to them," Claire said quietly, breaking the endless loop of Mark's pacing.
Mark stopped dead in his tracks, turning to stare at her as if she had spoken in a foreign language. "Talk to who? Vince and his crew? Claire, you don't understand the kind of people we're dealing with. They don't negotiate. They break kneecaps and burn bridges. They aren't going to listen to a schoolteacher."
"I'm not just a schoolteacher, Mark. I'm your wife, and my name is on the mortgage too," she replied, stepping into the dim light. Her face was set in hard, unyielding lines. "We've been running from these men for two years. Every time you step into that ring, you think you're buying us time, but you're just digging the hole deeper. They own you because you let them own you."
"I do it to protect you and Lily!" Mark shouted, slamming his heavy hand down on the Formica counter, rattling the coffee mugs.

"Keep your voice down," Claire hissed, her eyes flashing with a dangerous fury that silenced him instantly. "You aren't protecting us by turning our lives into a ticking bomb. If we're going to fix this, we do it together, or I take Lily and I walk out that front door tonight."
Mark stared at her, breathing heavily through his nose. The sheer audacity of her ultimatum hung in the stale kitchen air. For years, he had operated under the delusion that his physical strength was the only currency that mattered in a hostile world. Yet, looking at Claire now, he saw a spine of steel that his brutal punches could never break. He sank slowly into one of the wooden kitchen chairs, burying his face in his large, calloused hands. The muscular facade cracked entirely, revealing the terrified man beneath. Claire didn't rush to comfort him; she stood her ground, waiting for the inevitable surrender.
