Chapter 9: The Glass Fortress

The elevator doors slid open with a soft, pneumatic hiss, revealing the sleek, minimalist lobby of the fiftieth-floor executive suite. Eleanor stepped out first, her turquoise blazer catching the cool, artificial light of the corporate headquarters. Maya walked close beside her, her head held high, completely unfazed by the murmurs and curious stares of the administrative assistants stationed behind the glass reception desks.
As they approached the double doors of the main boardroom, Arthur stepped out into the hallway, his face twisted into a mask of calculated annoyance. He had clearly expected Eleanor to cower after seeing the reporters downstairs, but her calm, aristocratic demeanor threw him entirely off balance.
"Eleanor, what is the meaning of this circus?" Arthur demanded, his voice echoing off the polished marble floors. He spared a brief, dismissive glance down at Maya, his eyes narrowing. "And why have you brought a homeless child into a secure corporate facility? Security will be escorting her out immediately."
"Touch her, Arthur, and I will personally initiate a criminal investigation into your unauthorized asset transfers from nineteen-ninety-four," Eleanor replied, her voice ringing out with crystal clarity.
Arthur froze, the color draining slightly from his meticulously groomed face. He took a half-step back, his eyes darting quickly to the closed boardroom doors behind him, where several senior board members were already beginning to assemble for the morning session.
"You don't know what you’re talking about," Arthur hissed, lowering his voice into a venomous whisper as he closed the physical distance between them. "You’re dragging the family name through the mud over a ghost. Clara is dead, and whatever fantasies you’ve cooked up in that grand estate of yours will never see the light of day in a court of law."
"Clara may be gone, Arthur, but her legacy is standing right here," Eleanor said, stepping aside to reveal Maya fully. "This is Maya Vance, legal heir to Clara’s estate, and owner of thirty-two percent of the voting shares in this corporation. She is here to take her seat at the board table."
Arthur stared at the young girl, his mind racing as he calculated the catastrophic damage this revelation would inflict on his carefully constructed empire. For thirty years, he had operated under the assumption that the bloodline was successfully severed. Now, standing in the hallway of his own fortress, he realized that the past had come back to exact payment in full.
"You’re insane," Arthur muttered, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage.
May you like
"Not insane, Arthur," Eleanor replied smoothly, taking Maya’s hand and leading her toward the boardroom doors. "Just thorough. Shall we go inside, or would you prefer to announce your resignation in the hallway?"
