Chapter 5: The Unseen Witness

Later that afternoon, the quiet calm of the estate was interrupted by the sharp chime of the front doorbell. Eleanor, who had spent the last hour helping Maya clean up in the guest suite and providing her with fresh, comfortable clothing, froze in the hallway. Maya peeked out from the doorway of the grand bedroom, her eyes wide with sudden panic.

"Stay inside," Eleanor instructed in a hushed, authoritative tone. "Do not open this door for anyone, no matter who it is."

Eleanor walked briskly down the long corridor, her turquoise blazer rustling softly against the stillness of the afternoon air. When she swung the heavy oak front door open, she was greeted by the imposing figure of Arthur Vance, her paternal cousin and the current managing trustee of the family estate. Arthur’s silver hair was impeccably combed, and his tailored charcoal suit radiated corporate authority. His sharp eyes scanned Eleanor’s face, instantly detecting the subtle tension in her posture.

"Eleanor," Arthur said smoothly, stepping uninvited into the foyer without waiting for an invitation. "I received a frantic call from the security company. Apparently, the perimeter sensor tripped earlier this morning. A trespasser. The police were notified, but I wanted to check on you personally."

Eleanor stood her ground, blocking the direct path toward the interior hallways with calculated precision. "There was an intruder, Arthur, but the situation is entirely under control. Security made a mistake on the automated dispatch, and I canceled the police report."

Arthur raised a skeptical eyebrow, his gaze lingering on Eleanor’s tense expression. "Under control? That’s unlike you, Eleanor. Usually, you’re the first to demand maximum prosecution for trespassers. Are you sure nothing was taken? Family heirlooms, documents from the study desk?"

"Nothing of value was missing," Eleanor lied smoothly, her heart beating a steady, controlled rhythm against her ribs. She despised lying, but protecting Maya from Arthur’s predatory instincts took immediate precedence. Arthur had been the primary architect of Clara’s banishment thirty years ago, acting on their grandfather's ruthless directives to protect the family name at all costs. If Arthur discovered that Clara’s daughter was breathing air inside this house, he would make the girl disappear just as efficiently as he had erased her mother.

Arthur took a slow step forward, his eyes narrowing as he caught a faint glimpse of a child’s blue sneaker peeking out from behind the corner of the hallway mirror. The cold calculation in Arthur’s eyes sharpened instantly.

"You’re hiding something, Eleanor," Arthur murmured, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "And in this family, secrets have a way of becoming very expensive."
