Chapter 10: Facing the Board

The mahogany boardroom was dominated by a massive oval table surrounded by leather executive chairs. Twelve senior board members sat in hushed conversation, their attention instantly snapping to the entrance as Eleanor and Maya walked into the room. Arthur trailed closely behind them, his face locked in a tense, defensive grimace, struggling desperately to maintain the illusion of corporate control.
Eleanor guided Maya to the head of the table, pulling out the primary chair for the girl before taking her own seat directly to her right. The board members exchanged bewildered glances, whispering among themselves at the surreal sight of a young girl in a simple beige t-shirt sitting at the most powerful seat in the corporate hierarchy.
"Good morning, members of the board," Eleanor announced, her voice carrying an effortless authority that commanded absolute silence. "I apologize for the abrupt nature of this emergency summons, but we have urgent matters regarding corporate governance, historical share distribution, and fiduciary malfeasance that require our immediate attention."
Arthur moved quickly to the opposite end of the table, slamming his palms down onto the wood surface. "This is an absurdity!" Arthur shouted, breaking his usual composed demeanor as panic finally broke through his defenses. "Eleanor has suffered a severe mental lapse and brought an unrelated minor into a restricted corporate meeting under false pretenses. I move to adjourn this meeting immediately and have security remove them from the premises."
Not a single board member raised a hand to second Arthur’s motion. They sat in stony silence, their eyes fixed on Eleanor, who calmly opened a sleek leather portfolio and slid a certified legal document across the polished wood toward the lead independent director.
"Before you vote on anything, Arthur, I suggest you look at Exhibit A," Eleanor said evenly, sliding a notarized copy of Clara’s original share certificates alongside the financial ledger transcripts from nineteen-ninety-four. "These documents establish beyond any legal doubt that thirty-two percent of this company’s voting shares belong rightfully to Maya Vance, the legal granddaughter of our founder and the sole surviving heir of Clara Vance."
The lead director, an elderly man who had served the company for decades, picked up the documents with trembling fingers. He adjusted his reading glasses, scanning the signatures, the embossed seals, and the historical ledger entries with meticulous care.
"Good God," the director whispered, looking up from the papers to stare directly at Maya. "The signatures are authentic. The trust provisions were never legally dissolved. Miss Vance... your mother was Clara?"

"Yes, sir," Maya answered, her voice clear, steady, and resonant in the quiet room. "And I am here to make sure the truth is finally brought to light."
