Chapter 13: The High Society Gala**

One year after that fateful November night, Victoria received a formal invitation in the mail: The Annual Mayor’s Charity Gala for Children’s Healthcare.

It was the very event she used to obsess over. Attached to the invitation was a personal note from the committee chairwoman, asking Victoria if her new foundation would consider being the evening's guest of honor.

Julian looked at the invitation over breakfast. "Do you want to go?"

Victoria looked out the window at the garden, where Mary was teaching Lily how to plant tomato seedlings in the rich soil.

"Yes," Victoria said with a serene smile. "I think it's time to close that chapter for good."

On the evening of the gala, the ballroom of the Grand Hyatt Chicago was filled with the city’s wealthiest patrons. When Victoria and Julian walked through the double doors, heads turned and whispers began immediately.

Victoria wore a modest, beautifully tailored emerald-green dress—handcrafted from raw silk by Mary and finished by Victoria’s own hands. Around her neck, in place of diamonds, she wore the tarnished silver heart locket containing the spelling bee clipping.

Eleanor Vance approached them within minutes, her gaze dripping with passive-aggressive scrutiny.

"Victoria, darling! We heard you moved out to the country to live a... simpler life," Eleanor said, glancing at Victoria’s homemade dress. "How terribly rustic. But tell me, don't you miss the finer things?"

Victoria looked Eleanor straight in the eye, her voice calm, clear, and filled with an unshakeable dignity.

"Eleanor, for years I thought the finer things were the ones with the highest price tags," Victoria said gently. "It took almost losing my mother to realize that true wealth isn't what you show off to the world. It’s what you treasure when nobody is watching."

Eleanor opened her mouth to reply, but found no words. She turned and walked away, looking suddenly small and hollow among the glitter of the room.
