Chapter 13

The red laser dot danced steadily across the center of the man in the grey suit’s forehead, cast by the federal sniper stationed in the skylight high above. But the man didn't flinch. He simply reached inside his tailored coat, his fingers slipping smoothly into his inner pocket.

"Don't do it," Sarah warned, raising her own sidearm, her stance widening into a textbook combat posture. "One twitch, and our sniper takes the shot."

"Your sniper is very good, Agent Vance," the man smiled, pulling a small, heavy silver detonator from his coat. " მაგრამ he’s looking through a thermal scope calibrated for human body heat. He’s not looking at the high-explosive linear charges wired directly to the main structural support beams of this entire warehouse."

Hayes’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "You rigged the building? This facility is zoned as a historical blast-containment site—if you blow these beams, the entire city block collapses into the old underground railway tunnels!"

"Exactly," the man said, his thumb resting lightly on the red activation button of the detonator. "Which means either we walk out of here right now with the federal folder and complete the infrastructure transfer, or we all become a permanent historical footnote buried beneath fifty feet of concrete and steel."

Officer Davis whimpered, curling himself into a tight ball on the floor near the wooden crates. Miller struggled against the ropes binding her chair, her blue eyes blazing with a mixture of terror and unyielding fury.

"Marcus," Sarah murmured out of the side of her mouth, her eyes locked on the detonator. "He's bluffing. The structural integrity codes won't allow a full collapse without triggering regional seismic alarms."

"He's not bluffing," Marcus replied, his voice deadly calm as he stared at the rusted support pillars lining the perimeter of the warehouse. "Look at the stress fractures in the concrete around the base of those pillars. They've been cutting into the load-bearing steel for weeks. This place was engineered to be a tomb from day one."

Silence descended on the warehouse, broken only by the relentless drumming of the rain against the metal roof.

The man in the grey suit pressed his thumb fractionally harder against the button, the tiny LED light flashing from green to an aggressive, blinking amber. "Ten seconds, Agent Vance. Hand over the folder, or I take everyone in this room down with me."

Sarah looked down at the brown leather folder in her hands. Inside lay the encrypted drives, the classified telemetry, the proof of systemic rot that went all the way to the top of the federal government. If she gave it to him, the syndicate wins, and the corruption becomes permanent. If she refused, they all die, and the truth is buried forever.

She took a slow, deep breath, her chest rising and falling naturally, her facial micro-expressions completely restrained. She looked up, locked eyes with the man in the grey suit, and slowly raised the folder.

"You want the truth?" Sarah whispered. "Catch."
