Chapter 1

The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the manicured lawns of Maple Street. Officer Miller adjusted the utility belt around her waist, her blonde hair pulled tightly back into a neat ponytail. Her blue police uniform shirt was crisp, tucked rigidly into her dark pants. A few yards away, a police cruiser idled, its engine humming a low, mechanical drone. Miller spotted a figure moving briskly along the sidewalk, carrying a bulky camo bag and a worn brown leather folder.
"Hey! Stop right there! Excuse me!" Miller shouted, her voice cutting through the quiet neighborhood air with an aggressive edge.
The woman stopped instantly. She turned, her short platinum blonde hair catching the light, large hoop earrings glinting against her cheeks. She wore a dark blue polo shirt and khaki pants, looking entirely out of place under the sudden, hostile glare of the law.
"What are you doing walking around this neighborhood?" Miller demanded, stepping closer, her hand resting firmly on her hip.
The woman’s chest rose and fell rapidly beneath her polo shirt. Her blue eyes widened in genuine disbelief. Instead of panicking, she slowly unzipped the flap of the brown leather folder, pulling out a thick set of official government documents.
Before Miller could process the papers, heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel behind them. A tall Black male officer in a crisp blue uniform shirt, dark pants, and a black tie stepped into the frame, sandwiching the woman between them.
"Ask that again and you'll find out exactly how badly you stopped the wrong woman," the platinum-haired woman said, her voice dropping an octave, completely devoid of fear.
The male officer stepped directly into Miller’s personal space, his face a mask of cold, unyielding authority. The woman clutched her camo bag tighter, watching the escalating tension with a mixture of anxiety and grim satisfaction.
