Chapter 2: The Severed Line

The champagne flute slipped from Victoria’s fingers, shattering against the teak deck in a splash of crystal and sparkling wine.
Julian whipped off his sunglasses, his handsome face instantly drained of color. ""What did you just call her?""
Sofia did not look at Julian. She walked directly past the frozen couple, stopping one pace before Elena, and opened the leather binder.
""As of 2:00 PM Eastern Standard Time,"" Sofia announced, her voice echoing across the open deck, ""the *Astraea* has been placed under federal maritime receivership due to ninety-two million dollars in defaulted mezzanine debt issued by Vance Maritime Holdings. Under Section 4 of the sovereign maritime lien, the primary bondholder—Castile Oceanographic & Ecological Trust—has exercised immediate possessory foreclosure.""
Sofia turned the binder toward Elena, presenting an archival fountain pen.
Elena took the pen, signing her signature across the three certified pages with smooth, unbroken strokes.
""Elena, what is the meaning of this?"" Victoria shrieked, all society poise disintegrating into desperate panic. ""This yacht belongs to my family! Arthur built this company!""
Elena handed the pen back to Sofia and turned her dark eyes upon the woman in the red dress.
""Arthur didn't build a company, Victoria,"" Elena said, her voice dropping into a quiet, resonant baritone that instantly commanded the entire promenade. ""Arthur built a pyramid scheme of uninsurable shell corporations. For five years, you and Julian leveraged this vessel to secure municipal harbor subsidies in three states while dumping untreated bunker sludge into protected coastal marine sanctuaries.""
Elena looked at Julian, who stood clutching the railing as if the deck were tilting beneath his feet.
""You told me I was a decorative accessory, Julian,"" Elena continued softly. ""You told me that without your family name, I was nothing. But my family didn't give me a name to put on billboards. They gave me the capital to audit your rot.""

Commander Boone stepped forward, his hand resting on his service belt. ""Mr. Vance, Mrs. Vance—the harbor tender is waiting at the starboard boarding platform. You have five minutes to collect your personal effects. All corporate assets, accounts, and communications on this vessel are under federal seal.""
