Chapter 1: The Tide on the Teak

The afternoon sun blazed down on the azure waters of Biscayne Bay, turning the wake of fifty moored mega-yachts into blinding liquid diamonds. The superyacht *Astraea*—a three-hundred-foot monument of brushed titanium, teak decking, and dark mirrored glass—hummed with the ambient bass of a private string quartet entertaining two hundred of Miami’s venture capitalists, real estate scions, and European aristocrats.

Elena Castile stood near the polished chrome railing on the aft promenade deck. Her strapless lilac gown, embroidered with thousands of hand-stitched micro-pearls and amethyst crystals, caught the light with every subtle breath. Around her neck, the heirloom Castile amethyst collar gleamed with a deep, royal violet. Her black smartphone rested lightly against her manicured fingertips, the screen glowing with an active, unmuted voice channel to the port maritime registry.

Beside her, Julian Vance adjusted his designer sunglasses, his ivory tuxedo jacket gleaming in the sun. His voice was pitched low, tight with condescending impatience.

""Go downstairs, Elena,"" Julian muttered, flicking his wrist toward the lower companionway. ""You're upsetting Mom. This launch party is for the Sterling-Vance international maritime fund. You were supposed to stay in the guest cabin until the formal photographs.""

Julian’s mother, Victoria Vance, stepped forward, the beaded silk of her deep ruby gown rustling aggressively against the deck planks. Victoria raised her crystal flute of vintage Krug champagne, her mouth curling into a sneer of pure, unfiltered venom.

""Service staff and honorary guests belong below deck, my dear,"" Victoria said smoothly, her eyes sweeping over Elena’s jewelry with naked disdain. ""You may have purchased that rented costume to play dress-up, but in this world, bloodlines write the checks. Run along before security escorts you to the tender boat.""

Elena did not flinch. She did not lower her head. She tilted her chin slightly, looking at Victoria not with anger, but with the calm detachment of a chess grandmaster watching an amateur celebrate a poisoned pawn.

The polished glass doors of the sky lounge slid open with a whisper.

Stepping out onto the sunlit deck was Sofia Althaus—chief compliance officer of the International Maritime Arbitration Tribunal—clad in a tailored dove-grey pantsuit, flanked by Commander Thomas Boone of the United States Coast Guard and two armed federal marshals.

Sofia held a black leather document binder stamped with the golden seal of the Southern District Federal Court.

""Madam President,"" Sofia said, her crisp, professional voice carrying cleanly over the quartet and the murmur of the crowd. ""The maritime foreclosure papers and asset seizure warrants are executed and ready for your signature.""
