Chapter 6: Fractured Alliances

The morning sun brought no warmth to Willowbrook, only a harsh, glaring light that exposed the dust motes dancing in the grand foyer. Eleanor descended the sweeping staircase with measured precision, her posture rigid and unyielding. In the breakfast room, Vanessa sat alone, sipping black coffee. She looked remarkably composed for someone whose late-night operative had just been caught and dismissed. Her white silk suit had been replaced by a sharp emerald dress that seemed to bleed color against the pale walls.
"Sleep well, Eleanor?" Vanessa asked without looking up from her cup. "It sounds like there was some commotion in the hallways last night. Security really should patrol more frequently."
"Security is quite adequate, Vanessa," Eleanor replied, pulling out her usual chair at the head of the long mahogany table and taking her seat. "They know the difference between an invited guest and a common trespasser. Though I suppose the distinction is often lost on people who mistake theft for marriage."
Vanessa finally looked up, her dark eyes flashing with suppressed rage. She set her coffee cup down with a sharp clatter, the porcelain chipping slightly against the saucer. "You think you're untouchable in this mausoleum. You think because your grandfather built these walls with questionable loans and exploited labor that you own the future. But the world has moved on, Eleanor. Andrew is weak, the estate is drowning in maintenance debt, and my investors are ready to turn this entire property into a luxury golf resort."
Andrew walked into the room just in time to catch the last sentence. He stopped dead in his tracks, his hand gripping the doorframe so tightly his knuckles turned white. "A golf resort?" Andrew breathed, looking at his wife as if seeing a stranger for the very first time. "Vanessa, you said we were just going to develop the north parcel for residential housing. You said we were saving the estate."
"I said whatever was necessary to get your signature, Andrew," Vanessa replied coldly, not even bothering to maintain her sweet facade anymore. The mask was gone, leaving only naked ambition. "You're a useless heir to a dying dynasty. Without me, you'd be living in a studio apartment working a mid-level compliance job."

Andrew staggered forward, the betrayal hitting him with physical force. He looked at his mother, seeking refuge in the very eyes he had avoided for years. Eleanor did not gloat; she simply watched her son reap the bitter harvest of his own foolish choices.
"The board meeting is at noon," Eleanor said quietly, breaking the heavy silence. "And since Andrew is still a director of the trust, he will be casting his vote alongside me. As for you, Vanessa, your presence is no longer requested anywhere on Willowbrook property."
