Chapter 14: Restoring the Pillars

Over the next three weeks, the Willowbrook estate transformed into an active restoration site. Heavy construction vehicles lined the outer perimeter, while teams of specialized foundation engineers worked around the clock in the subterranean levels to inject high-density polymer grout into the limestone fissures and install permanent steel shoring beams beneath the banquet hall.

The public scandal had erupted precisely as Detective Miller predicted. Financial blogs, local newspapers, and national tabloids ran sensational headlines detailing the disastrous wedding, the corporate fraud investigation, and Vanessa’s dramatic arrest at her downtown office. Yet, despite the media circus, the estate remained an impenetrable fortress. Eleanor issued a single, concise press statement through the family's legal counsel, refusing all interview requests and directing the estate's full focus inward.

Andrew had undergone a quiet, profound transformation. He no longer spent his days lounging in luxury or delegating responsibilities to hired hands. Every morning at 6:00 AM, dressed in work boots and a heavy flannel shirt, he descended into the cellar alongside the engineers, inspecting the mortar repairs, learning the structural schematics of the building, and actively participating in the physical preservation of his heritage.

Eleanor watched his progress from her second-floor parlor, her initial cold disappointment slowly giving way to a cautious, earned respect. She saw in him, for the first time, the quiet resilience required to be a true steward of Willowbrook.

One afternoon, as the final steel beam was bolted securely into place beneath the east wing, Marcus Vance climbed the stone stairs to the library where Eleanor and Andrew were reviewing the final engineering sign-off.

"The structural integrity is fully restored," Marcus announced, wiping grease from his hands with a shop towel. "The limestone bedrock has been stabilized, and the foundation is actually stronger now than it was before the excavation damage."

Andrew let out a long breath, wiping sweat from his forehead. He looked at his mother, a genuine, unforced smile touching his lips. "We did it."

Eleanor closed the engineering report and looked up at her son, her gray eyes softening with a warmth that had been absent since the wedding day. "You did it, Andrew. You finally earned the ground you're standing on."
