Chapter 4: Shadows of the Past

The tension in the library grew so dense that it seemed to bend the light itself. Vanessa stood up slowly, her white silk pantsuit rustling. Her initial amusement had vanished, replaced by a cold, sharp defensive posture. She glared at Eleanor, recognizing that the older woman was not simply fighting for control of an estate, but for the very survival of her legacy.
"You like to play the grand matriarch, Eleanor, holding court in this dusty tomb," Vanessa said, her voice dropping an octave, losing its manufactured sweetness. "You act as if your hands are clean. Everyone in financial circles knows how your late husband consolidated this empire in the nineties. You didn't build Willowbrook on prayers and charity."
Andrew flinched at the accusation, looking anxiously between the two women. "Vanessa, please, let's not bring up old rumors. That has nothing to do with us."
"It has everything to do with us, Andrew," Eleanor countered steadily, standing up from her desk to tower over her son. She was older, shorter, and less physically imposing than Vanessa, yet her presence commanded the room entirely. "Your wife is desperately searching for skeletons because she believes everyone is as transactional as she is. But let us talk about your parents, Vanessa. Let us talk about why they suddenly disappeared from their suburban life right before you set your sights on my son."
Vanessa’s breath hitched. For the first time since they had met, the immaculate mask slipped completely. Her eyes widened with genuine panic, a micro-expression of raw fear that she quickly tried to swallow. "My parents have nothing to do with this. They live quiet, respectable lives."
"Do they?" Eleanor walked around the desk, stopping just inches from Vanessa. She smelled faintly of expensive lavender and old paper. "Or are they currently residing in a high-priced rental in the Hamptons, paid for by wire transfers originating from accounts that Andrew supposedly controls?"

Andrew stared at his wife, confusion clouding his features. "Vanessa? What is Mom talking about? We used our savings for your parents' medical expenses."
"Shut up, Andrew," Vanessa snapped, turning on him with a flash of genuine venom. She immediately regretted the outburst as Andrew recoiled, wounded and bewildered. Vanessa turned back to Eleanor, her voice low and dangerous. "You think you can dig into my family's affairs without consequences? You're playing a very dangerous game, Eleanor. This estate is old, and old things tend to burn down when they're left in the dark."
