Chapter 9: The Corridor of Escape

The door swung open fully, revealing Toby standing in his rumpled beige pajamas, holding Lily’s small hand behind him. Lily rubbed her sleepy eyes, looking confused and disoriented by the middle-of-the-night disruption. "Mommy?" Lily whispered, her small voice cutting through the tense silence of the hallway like a delicate bell. Clara dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms around both children in a fierce, desperate embrace that brought tears prancing to her eyes. "We have to go right now, babies," Clara whispered urgently, pulling back to look into Toby’s intelligent, frightened eyes. "We're going to play a game, just like earlier, but we need to be very quiet and run to the car."

Toby nodded solemnly, accepting the gravity of the situation without asking questions. He understood enough to know that Julian’s calm exterior masked a terrifying reality. Clara stood up, taking each of them by the hand, and began guiding them stealthily toward the back service staircase that led directly to the garage. If Julian and his associate were downstairs in the main living area, the garage was their best and perhaps only path to freedom. The keys to Julian’s sedan usually hung on a magnetic rack just inside the mudroom door—a detail she had memorized over years of domestic routine.

As they reached the top of the service stairs, the heavy thud of footsteps echoing from the main foyer below froze them in their tracks. Julian’s raised voice, sharp and commanding, drifted up the stairwell. "Check the perimeter again! She couldn't have gone far without shoes!" His associate muttered a harsh reply, and the sound of heavy boots moving toward the kitchen signaled that their window of opportunity was rapidly closing. Clara pulled the children back into the shadows of the hallway alcove, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. They needed to move before the search party reached the second floor.

"Hold onto my dress and don't let go, no matter what happens," Clara whispered fiercely to Toby and Lily, who nodded with wide, trembling eyes. She led them down the narrow service stairs, every step a agonizing exercise in stealth. They reached the bottom landing, which opened directly into the mudroom adjacent to the garage. The magnetic key rack was just a few feet away on the wall, gleaming in the dim light of the overhead utility bulb. Clara stretched out her hand, her fingers brushing the cold metal rings just as the mudroom door from the kitchen began to turn.

Before the door could open fully, Clara grabbed the car keys, scooped Lily up into her arms, and grabbed Toby’s hand, diving through the interior fire door into the dark, cavernous space of the garage. The family SUV sat parked in its usual spot, its dark metallic paint absorbing the faint light filtering through the small high windows. Clara unlocked the vehicle with a soft beep of the key fob, pulling open the rear door and bundling Toby and Lily into the back seat. She slammed the door shut, scrambled into the driver's seat, and punched the dashboard ignition button with trembling, frantic fingers.
