Chapter 10: The Garage Gate

The SUV’s engine roared to life with a deep, rummaging purr that echoed off the concrete walls of the garage, shattering the tense silence of the night. Clara threw the transmission into reverse, her foot pressing down on the accelerator. The vehicle lurched backward, its tires squealing slightly against the smooth floor as it cleared the parking space in one fluid motion. In the rearview mirror, she saw the interior fire door burst open. Julian stood framed in the doorway, his dark sweater blending into the shadows, his face illuminated by the harsh overhead light. For a fraction of a second, his calm facade cracked, revealing a flash of absolute, unbridled fury.

Julian charged forward, sprinting toward the rear of the reversing SUV, but Clara slammed the gearshift into drive and stepped hard on the gas pedal. The heavy vehicle surged forward toward the large metal garage door, which was still closed tight. Without hesitation, Clara aimed the bumper directly at the manual override switch on the wall beside the door, but before her hand could reach it, the garage door’s automatic sensor caught the movement, or perhaps Julian triggered it from a remote device in his hand. The heavy metal door began its slow, mechanical ascent, grinding upward with a metallic screech that seemed to take an eternity.

Through the windshield, Clara watched the gap widen, revealing the dark driveway and the open road beyond the property gates. But Julian was closing the distance, his long strides eating up the concrete floor as he reached the driver's side window. He slammed his fist against the reinforced glass, shouting something that was drowned out by the roar of the engine and the grinding mechanism of the door. Toby let out a sharp cry from the back seat, burying his face in his knees, while Lily began to sob softly. Clara refused to look over. She kept her eyes locked on the growing strip of night sky beneath the rising garage door.

The metal door reached its maximum height just as the front bumper of the SUV cleared the threshold. Clara pressed the accelerator to the floor, launching the vehicle out of the garage and down the asphalt driveway. In the side mirror, she saw Julian standing at the edge of the property line, bathed in the red glow of the taillights, watching them go with a terrifying stillness that chilled her to the bone. He wasn't chasing them anymore because he didn't need to; he knew where every highway camera was, and he controlled the financial resources to brand her a fugitive before the sun rose. But Clara didn't care about the odds. She was out of the house, her children were safe in the back seat, and for the first time in three years, she was steering her own destiny.
