Chapter 7: An Unwelcome Arrival

Downstairs in the grand entryway, the heavy footsteps echoed across the Italian tile floor, sounding heavy and purposeful. Julian released his grip on Clara’s arm, stepping back half a step while keeping a wary eye on her. "Stay here. Do not move," he warned in a low, dangerous whisper before slipping out of the study and pulling the heavy mahogany door shut behind him, though he didn't have time to lock it. Clara didn't hesitate. The moment the latch clicked, she crept quietly to the door, pressing her ear against the polished wood to listen to the muffled conversation unfolding in the foyer below.
"You're early," Julian’s voice drifted up the stairwell, tight and laced with restrained irritation. "The perimeter isn't secure yet." A second voice answered, deep, rasped, and carrying an unmistakable edge of urgency. "Plans changed, Julian. The firm’s legal team found out about the offshore discrepancies. We have less than twenty-four hours before the financial audits hit your accounts. We need to execute the relocation tonight, not Thursday." Clara’s breath caught in her throat. Julian wasn't just managing a domestic dispute or a custody setup; he was running from federal financial crimes, utilizing his meticulously fabricated family drama as a diversion or a clean break before the authorities caught up with him.
"The children are asleep, and Clara is..." Julian hesitated, his voice dropping lower so the words became unintelligible murmurs. Clara strained against the wood, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She needed to reach Toby and Lily before Julian and his associate decided to accelerate their departure timeline. Turning quietly away from the door, she surveyed the study for another exit. There were no other doors, but the large French windows behind the mahogany desk looked out over the flat roof of the patio extension below, offering a precarious drop to the green lawn twenty feet beneath.

She moved quickly to the desk, climbing onto the polished wood and pushing open the heavy glass casement windows. The cool autumn air rushed into the warm study, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant woodsmoke. Clara peered down into the darkness of the backyard where the wooden playhouse stood like a silent sentinel in the gloom. It was a steep drop, but far safer than remaining inside to be packed up like a piece of luggage in Julian’s criminal exit strategy. She swung her legs over the windowsill, gripping the stone sill with her fingertips as her heels dangled precariously above the patio roof.
A sudden click at the study door made her freeze. The brass handle turned. Clara let go, dropping onto the gravel-covered roof with a muffled thud that sent sharp pain shooting up her ankles. She rolled instinctively to absorb the impact, staying low against the dark shingles as the window above her swung open fully. Julian’s silhouette appeared in the frame, casting a long shadow across the roof. "Clara?" his voice called out into the dark, dangerously calm and laced with sudden menace. She held her breath, pressing her body flat against the sloping roof, praying the darkness would swallow her before he spotted her against the pale gravel.
