Chapter 8: Dawn of Reckoning

The first pale rays of morning sunlight cut through the tall windows of Julian’s study, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the stale air. Julian had not slept. He sat at his oak desk, a cup of cold black coffee at his elbow, reviewing the preliminary damage reports sent by his legal team. The Sterling-Vance stock was holding steady for the moment, shielded by a carefully orchestrated PR embargo, but the cracks in the corporate facade were widening rapidly.
The intercom on his desk buzzed softly. Julian pressed the talk button without looking up. "Yes?"
"Mr. Sterling," his executive assistant’s voice crackled through the speaker, tight with professional anxiety. "Mr. Vance is on line one. He demands to know why the wedding was abruptly terminated and why his daughter is currently locked in her suite refusing to speak to anyone."
Julian exhaled slowly, leaning back in his leather chair. "Put him through."
A click echoed through the room, followed immediately by the booming, furious voice of Arthur Vance. "Julian! What in God's name is happening over there? Victoria called my private line at three in the morning, hysterical, claiming you threw her out of your home and annulled her marriage over some absurd domestic dispute!"
"Your daughter assaulted a guest in my home, Arthur," Julian said, his voice remarkably calm and level. "She left severe, documented physical injuries across Clara's back. Furthermore, we have audio recordings of Victoria coercing Leo into marriage under threat of financial ruin and blackmail."
There was a long, suffocating silence on the other end of the line. Arthur Vance was a ruthless businessman, but he was also a shrewd strategist who understood liability when it was laid out plainly.
"Severe injuries?" Arthur repeated, his tone dropping from blustering rage to cold caution. "Photographs?"
"Backed up on secure servers and currently sitting on my attorney's desk," Julian replied. "You can fight me in court, Arthur, and drag both our companies down into a public scandal that will destroy the Vance shipping lines alongside Sterling Enterprises, or you can quietly sign the annulment papers my counsel will email to your office within the hour."
Another heavy pause hung in the air. Julian could hear the faint sound of Arthur breathing heavily, calculating the cost of his daughter's unbridled temper against his own vast empire.

"Send the papers," Arthur bit out, his voice laced with venom and defeat. "And keep Victoria away from my offices until she learns how to control her violent impulses."
"Agreed," Julian said, and terminated the call.
