THE BRUISED WEDDING VOW / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7: The Midnight Departure

The grandfather clock struck midnight, its deep, resonant chimes echoing through the sprawling estate like a series of heavy hammer blows. In the front foyer, the marble floor reflected the harsh light of the crystal chandelier overhead. Julian stood near the heavy oak doors, watching as Leo dragged a single leather suitcase toward the exit. The young man’s black tuxedo was still rumpled, a tangible symbol of a wedding day that had imploded into a nightmare before the reception could even begin.

"Your ticket and passport are inside the folio," Julian said, his voice restrained and formal. "The car is waiting outside. Drive straight to the private airstrip."

Leo paused, his hand resting on the polished brass handle of his suitcase. He looked back at Julian, searching the older man’s stern face for a final trace of warmth or condemnation. Finding neither, Leo swallowed hard. "Will you tell my father?"

"I will handle your father," Julian replied flatly. "Just focus on not repeating your mistakes across the Atlantic."

Leo nodded once, then pushed the heavy door open, stepping out into the cool, damp night air. The door clicked shut behind him with a finality that seemed to seal off an entire era of the Sterling family's history.

Clara walked down the grand staircase a moment later, having changed out of her emerald green gown and into a simple black trench coat over a dark sweater. She carried a small overnight bag, her movements slow and measured to avoid straining her bruised back. Julian watched her descend, his hands clasped behind his back in his signature posture of guarded authority.

"Are you certain you won't stay the night?" Julian asked, his tone softening just a fraction. "The physician can check those bruises properly before you travel."

"I prefer to be away from this house," Clara answered, pausing on the bottom step to look him directly in the eye. "Thank you for stopping Victoria, Julian. But do not expect me to attend another Sterling family function ever again."

"I wouldn't dream of it," Julian replied quietly. "Have a safe journey, Clara."

As Clara stepped out into the night, Julian was left alone in the vast, echoing foyer. The white tuxedo jacket that had remained spotless throughout the chaos suddenly felt heavy, as though it were lined with lead. He turned away from the door and walked back toward the darkened study, knowing that tomorrow would bring the difficult task of picking through the financial and personal wreckage of a ruined empire.
