THE BRUISED WEDDING VOW / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4: Shadows in the Study

The mahogany-paneled study smelled of aged leather, pipe tobacco, and impending ruin. Julian sat behind his massive oak desk, refusing to offer a seat to anyone else. Victoria paced near the dying embers of the fireplace, her white wedding gown sweeping up ash from the hearth, ruining the fabric beyond any hope of salvation. Leo slumped into a high-backed leather armchair in the corner, staring blankly at his polished shoes, while Clara stood near the window, gazing out into the dark, rain-slicked gardens of the estate.

"Let us establish the facts," Julian began, his voice cutting through the crackle of the dying fire. "Clara, you came to this wedding as a guest of honor, yet you spent the morning locked in the bridal suite with Leo. Victoria walked in, found you together, and administered a severe physical beating, leaving undeniable evidence of abuse across Clara's back. Meanwhile, Leo watched, panicked, and failed to intervene."

"We were just talking," Leo muttered defensively, not looking up. "Clara was helping me fix my bowtie. I was having a panic attack about the wedding. Victoria has been suffocating me for months, and Clara was the only person who understood the pressure I was under."

"Talking," Victoria hissed, her voice sharp as glass. "In a locked room, with your hands on her waist, and her dress unzipped halfway down her spine? Do you take me for a fool, Leo? You think I don't know what kind of history you two share? You were sleeping together before we even got engaged."

Clara turned away from the window, her expression calm, though her eyes flashed with cold anger. "Victoria, your paranoia is astounding. Leo and I dated briefly four years ago. It ended amicably. I attended this wedding solely because Julian asked me to keep an eye on Leo, knowing how unstable this entire arrangement was."

Julian nodded slowly, confirming Clara's statement. "It is true. I asked Clara to be here. I knew Victoria’s temper was a liability, and I knew Leo lacked the backbone to call off a wedding he entered out of fear and coercion. I hoped that seeing a neutral third party would keep everyone on their best behavior. I miscalculated."

"You ruined everything," Victoria whispered, tears finally welling in her eyes, though they were born of frustration rather than remorse. "I loved him. I gave up everything for this family. And you two treated me like an outsider from day one."

"You did this to yourself," Julian said flatly. "You cannot build a marriage on terror and expect the foundation to hold when the first storm hits."
