Chapter 6: The Golden Threat

By Thursday afternoon, the Sterling dynasty launched its predictable counter-attack.

A sleek black limousine drove up the gravel lane of the farmstead. Arthur Sterling—Evelyn’s husband and senior managing partner of Sterling Capital—stepped onto the porch accompanied by two high-priced defense litigators.

Sebastian met them at the gate, his arms crossed over his olive wool jacket.

""Sebastian,"" Arthur began, his voice smooth and condescending. ""We are prepared to make this unfortunate misunderstanding disappear.""

Arthur opened a leather portfolio, sliding a certified bank draft across the table. ""One million dollars in cash for Miss Nolan. A fully funded medical trust for the boy. In exchange, she signs an affidavit stating she was disoriented and cannot verify who handled the necklace, and you surrender the original server drive.""

Tess walked out onto the porch, wearing a clean linen shirt and jeans, holding Leo’s hand.

She did not hide behind Sebastian. She stood tall, the bruise on her cheek faint but visible in the bright morning sun.

""Keep your money, Mr. Sterling,"" Tess said, her voice clear, steady, and resonant.

Arthur sneered. ""Girl, do you have any idea who you are talking to? You are a catering server living in a rental slum. With one phone call, my firm can ensure you never work a legal job in New England again.""

Sebastian took a step forward, his towering frame casting a long, dark shadow over the attorney.

""And with one keystroke, Arthur,"" Sebastian said with lethal calm, ""I transmit your offshore wire transfers from Zurich to the United States Attorney. Get off my family's land before I have federal marshals arrest you on this porch for felony witness tampering.""

Arthur Sterling’s face turned an ugly, mottled red. He snapped his briefcase shut, turned on his heel, and retreated to his limousine.
