Chapter 11: The First Unbroken Bloom

By May, the coastal fields of Narragansett Bay burst into a magnificent sea of deep purple lavender and white sea-pinks.

The farm’s first commercial harvest was an unprecedented success. Specialty perfumeries and botanical conservatories across New England had pre-ordered the entire crop.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, Tess and Sebastian stood at the edge of the field, watching Leo.

The ten-year-old boy was walking slowly down the stone path without his metal leg braces, his hands gently brushing the blooming lavender, laughing as a yellow swallowtail butterfly circled his head.

""Look at him, Tess,"" Sebastian whispered, his arm gently wrapping around her waist.

Tess leaned her head against his shoulder, tears of pure, unburdened joy shining in her eyes. ""Two years ago, I thought we would drown in that walkup apartment. I thought the world belonged only to people who could buy judges.""

""The world belongs to people who plant seeds, Tess,"" Sebastian said, turning to look into her eyes with deep, unreserved devotion. ""And I want to spend the rest of my life planting beside you.""
