Chapter 6 - The Arrest Of A Queen

The cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around Eleanor’s wrists with a definitive, metallic snap that echoed loudly across the manicured lawn. The high-society poise she had worn like a suit of armor for thirty years dissolved instantly, replaced by a raw, undignified panic. She twisted her arms instinctively, pulling against the officer’s grip, her beige sleeveless dress catching awkwardly on the edge of the patio stone.
“Don’t touch me!” Eleanor shrieked, her voice losing its polished restraint entirely as she glared at the two police officers. “Do you have any idea who my friends are? The district attorney dines at my home every second Tuesday of the month! You will be stripped of your badges before the sun comes up tomorrow!”
“Step this way, ma’am,” the officer instructed neutrally, guiding her firmly toward the open door of the cruiser. He showed no reaction to her threats, entirely accustomed to wealthy suspects throwing their status around when the law finally caught up with them.
Eleanor planted her heels in the gravel, refusing to move another inch, and turned her head desperately toward Mr. Harrison, who stood calmly by the edge of the driveway watching the proceedings unfold without a hint of sympathy.
“Harrison! Tell them!” Eleanor pleaded, her voice cracking with desperation. “You know how hard I worked to keep this company afloat after Arthur’s health failed! If you let them take me away like common criminal, the stock prices will plummet by morning!”
Mr. Harrison adjusted his glasses, folding his hands neatly over his leather portfolio.
“The stock prices stabilized the moment the court filed the restraining order, Eleanor,” Mr. Harrison replied coldly. “And as for your hard work—the forensic accountants have already flagged three dozen shell companies routing funds into your personal overseas accounts. You didn't save the company; you were liquidating it piece by piece.”
“That’s a lie! It was for tax restructuring!” Eleanor yelled, straining against the cuffs as the officer gently but firmly guided her down toward the back seat of the cruiser.
Clara walked slowly toward them, her footsteps crunching softly on the gravel path. She stopped a few feet away from the open cruiser door, looking down at the woman who had once destroyed her entire world with the stroke of a pen.
“You always were remarkably good at creative accounting,” Clara said quietly, her voice carrying a chillingly calm undertone.
Eleanor stopped struggling for a fraction of a second, turning her head with venomous hatred in her eyes.
“You think you’ve won, you old witch,” Eleanor hissed, leaning as far forward as the handcuffs allowed. “The real mastermind behind those accounts isn’t me. It’s sitting right in Arthur’s safe.”
Clara didn’t blink. She simply tilted her head, a flicker of curiosity crossing her features.

“What safe?” Clara asked.
