Chapter 14 - The Manhattan Call

Clara paused on the top step of the grand entrance, her finger hovering over the screen as the Manhattan number continued to ring. The morning breeze rustled the leaves of the oak trees lining the driveway, carrying the faint scent of blooming jasmine from the garden below. Mr. Harrison stood a few steps behind her, holding the leather portfolio containing the final estate documents ready for signature.

Clara took a steadying breath and pressed the accept button, holding the phone slowly to her ear.

“Hello?” she said, her voice carrying a rare note of hesitation.

“Hello, is this Clara Vance?” a bright, youthful voice asked from the other end of the line—a voice Clara hadn't heard spoken aloud in person since her daughter was a tiny infant, though she had watched her from afar in magazine spreads and gallery reviews for years.

Clara’s heart skipped a beat.

“Yes… yes, this is Clara,” she whispered, gripping the phone tightly.

“Mom,” Maya said softly on the other end, her voice trembling slightly with a mixture of nervousness and relief. “I… I don't really know how to say this, but I just got a call from a lawyer downtown saying that… saying that my grandfather left me something, and that you’re here at the estate.”

Clara closed her eyes for a brief second, feeling a wave of overwhelming emotion wash over her that no amount of wealth or legal victory could ever match.

“Where are you, sweetheart?” Clara asked, her voice cracking slightly.

“I’m in a cab,” Maya replied quickly, the sound of city traffic humming softly in the background. “I’m about twenty minutes away from the front gates. The lawyer said… he said it’s time we finally talked about everything.”

Clara opened her eyes, looking out over the sprawling estate that had been reclaimed from the ashes of the past, realizing that the true victory was never about the property or the bank accounts at all.

“I’ll be waiting right here at the front steps for you,” Clara said softly.

She hung up the phone and looked back at Mr. Harrison, who was offering a warm, knowing smile.

“She’s coming,” Clara announced simply.

“Then I’ll leave the final deed papers on the grand foyer table for when she arrives,” Mr. Harrison said, bowing his head respectfully before turning back toward his town car.

Clara walked down the steps and stood near the edge of the driveway, waiting for the cab to arrive. But as she watched the long stretch of the road leading up to the estate, a shadow suddenly detached itself from the edge of the tall oak trees near the security gate.
