Chapter 5 - Sirens In The Driveway

The piercing wail of distant police sirens cut through the night air, growing louder with every passing second as blue and red lights began to flash against the tall oak trees lining the grand driveway. Eleanor spun around, her eyes widening in sheer horror as two county cruiser cars turned the corner and rolled smoothly onto the gravel circle, their headlights cutting through the darkness and illuminating the ruined birthday cake and the smoking remnants of the designer handbag in the fire pit.

“You called the police?” Eleanor choked out, turning back to Clara with absolute betrayal written across her face. “You brought the authorities here? This is a private family matter!”

“Fraud and embezzlement aren't private family matters, Eleanor,” Clara said, standing tall as the cruiser doors opened and two uniformed officers stepped out onto the lawn, followed closely by a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit whom Eleanor recognized instantly as the senior partner of Arthur’s corporate legal firm, Mr. Harrison.

Mr. Harrison walked briskly across the grass, holding a thick leather portfolio under his arm. He didn't look at Eleanor with the warm deference he had shown her just an hour ago during the dinner toast. Instead, his expression was grim and professional.

“Good evening, Mrs. Vance,” Mr. Harrison said formally, stopping a few feet away.

“Harrison, tell these officers to leave immediately,” Eleanor commanded, slipping instantly back into her imperious socialite persona, though her voice lacked its usual steady authority. “This woman is trespassing and harassing me on my own property.”

Mr. Harrison opened his leather portfolio and pulled out an official court-stamped document.

“I’m afraid this is no longer your property, Eleanor,” Mr. Harrison said quietly, handing the paper to the leading police officer. “By executive order of the probate court, executed at 11:50 PM based on newly authenticated amendments to Arthur Vance’s final will and testament, all assets have been frozen pending an immediate forensic audit of corporate accounts.”

Eleanor stared at the lawyer, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps.

“You’re lying,” she whispered, shaking her head. “This is a conspiracy. You forged these documents!”

The police officer stepped forward, resting a hand calmly on his utility belt.

“Ma’am, I’m going to need you to step away from the table and place your hands where we can see them,” the officer instructed politely but firmly. “We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of financial forgery and obstruction of justice.”

Eleanor took a stumbling step backward, the ground feeling unstable beneath her heels.

“No,” she breathed, looking around at the encroaching officers, the cold lawyer, and Clara standing unflinchingly beside the fire pit. “You can’t do this to me. Do you know who I am?”

Clara stepped forward into the glow of the flashing cruiser lights, her expression calm, cold, and entirely victorious.

“Yes, Eleanor,” Clara said softly. “And soon, everyone else will too.”
