Chapter 6: The Master of the Forge

To construct the custom iron straps and structural trusses for the sanctuary’s new community center, Caleb introduced Laura to his nephew, David Thorne.

David was thirty-four, a former industrial metallurgist and master blacksmith who operated a traditional water-powered coal forge three miles down the creek. He had calm, intelligent hazel eyes, broad shoulders, and a quiet, respectful demeanor that carried no trace of pride.

For three weeks, David worked in the open framing bay of the sanctuary barn.

He heated heavy wrought-iron bars in the glowing charcoal bed, shaping custom strap hinges, fireplace cranes, and timber anchor plates on a four-hundred-pound steel anvil.

Every afternoon at four o'clock, Laura would bring down a pot of fresh chamomile tea sweetened with raw comb honey and warm sourdough bread to the forge.

They would sit on the oak framing above the millrace, watching the golden dusk light dance across the trout stream.

David spoke of iron—how raw iron was brittle and full of impurities until it was heated in the fire, beaten by the hammer, and quenched in cold water to make it resilient enough to hold a roof against winter gales.

Laura listened, recognizing her own journey in the metal.

""Most people run from the fire, David,"" Laura said softly one evening, her hand resting on the timber railing.

David looked at her, his eyes filled with quiet, unshakeable reverence.

""The fire isn't there to destroy you, Laura,"" David replied gently. ""It’s there to burn away everything that isn't real, so the true steel can stand.""
