Chapter 3: The Sanctuary in the Valley

Two months later, the scandal that had rocked the state of Virginia had settled into the quiet legal corridors of the Richmond federal courts.

Julian and Evelyn Vance were sentenced to forty years in a federal penitentiary for attempted capital murder, corporate fraud, and medical conspiracy. The entirety of the Vance commercial holdings was liquidated by court order to pay restitution to the workers and smallholders Julian had defrauded.

Laura Vance sat on the wide cedar porch of *The Blue Ridge Heritage Sanatorium & Apiary*—an 1880 timber-framed mountain sanctuary nestled high in the Shenandoah Valley.

The property had belonged to Laura’s maternal grandparents: three hundred acres of wild mountain meadows, organic apple orchards, and a rushing glacial-fed trout creek.

Laura was wrapped in a thick wool blanket, her dark hair resting against her shoulders. Her face was still thin, but the grey pallor of the neurotoxin had been replaced by the warm, healthy flush of mountain air and pure spring water.

Sitting beside her on a hand-hewn oak bench was Teresa Ramos. Teresa wore a simple cotton dress, shelling fresh sweet peas into a wooden bowl.

Laura reached out, taking Teresa’s scarred fingers into her own.

""They told me at the hospital that I had less than thirty minutes of oxygen left in that vault, Teresa,"" Laura said, her voice soft, rich, and trembling with unpayable gratitude. ""Why did you risk your life to swing that axe?""

Teresa looked up, her warm brown eyes clear and steady as the mountain ridges.

""Because my mother taught me that a person’s life is sacred, Señora Laura,"" Teresa replied gently. ""When I worked in that cold house, you treated me like a sister. You paid for my brother’s heart surgery when Julian wanted to fire me. Love doesn't stand by and watch a good person die.""

Laura smiled through her tears, squeezing Teresa’s hands.

""There are no señoras here, Teresa,"" Laura whispered. ""We are sisters. And we are going to build a home where no one will ever be treated like property again.""
