Chapter 9: The Federal Mandate

By late afternoon, the quiet suburban street outside the Vance estate was no longer quiet. Three unmarked black SUVs bearing federal license plates rolled silently down the avenue, followed by two military police transport vehicles. They parked in a disciplined semicircle, blocking the driveway and cutting off any avenue of escape.
Inside the house, the ringing of the landline telephone went completely ignored. Beatrice, Elena, and Julian stood together in the grand foyer, watching through the sidelights of the front door as federal agents in tactical windbreakers and military police officers in full gear stepped out onto the stone walkway.
The heavy brass knocker pounded against the oak door—three sharp, authoritative strikes that echoed through the high-ceilinged rooms. Beatrice looked at Elena, then down at Julian, who looked ready to collapse. The general took a deep, steadying breath, squaring her shoulders out of sheer, stubborn habit, refusing to cower even in defeat. She walked forward and pulled the door open herself.
Agent Marcus Vance stood at the threshold, flanked by federal marshals and digital forensics specialists. He held out an open folder containing multiple federal search warrants and arrest orders signed by a federal judge.
"General Beatrice Vance, Commander Elena Vance, and Julian Vance," Marcus said, his voice calm, clear, and utterly devoid of triumph. "You are being placed under arrest for federal procurement fraud, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and related felonies. You have the right to remain silent..."
Beatrice did not resist. She raised her hands slightly, her eyes locking onto Marcus with cold defiance. "I demand to speak with the Secretary of Defense," she said, her voice steady and commanding to the very end.

"The Secretary of Defense has already reviewed the audit logs, General," Marcus replied evenly, stepping past her into the foyer. "He’s the one who authorized the warrants."
Federal agents moved past the threshold, securing the premises, confiscating laptops, file cabinets, and physical ledgers from the study. Julian was handcuffed first, his head bowed in shame as federal agents led him out to a waiting transport vehicle. Elena followed shortly after, her military uniform stained by the disgrace of her actions, her posture rigid as she refused to look at the cameras flashing from the street corner.
