Chapter 10: The Unbroken Sister

Clara sat across the table in a quiet, sunlit safehouse miles away from the estate, watching the live news coverage on a muted television screen. The chyron scrolling across the bottom of the screen read: DEFENSE LOGISTICS SCANDAL: VANCE DYNASTY COLLAPSES AMID FEDERAL RAID. Footage showed Beatrice, Elena, and Julian being led out of their historic home in handcuffs, their faces obscured by federal windbreakers and legal briefs.

Marcus walked into the room, setting down two cups of hot coffee on the wooden table before pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite Clara. He looked at her with genuine respect, noticing the faint bruise still visible on her shoulder beneath the beige button-down shirt.

"It’s done, Clara," Marcus said softly. "The initial arrests are complete, the digital evidence is locked in federal custody, and the congressional oversight committee has already scheduled public hearings for next week. Your father’s legacy has finally been vindicated."

Clara took a sip of the warm coffee, feeling the tension slowly drain from her muscles for the first time in months. She thought of the hardwood floor, the heavy wooden mace, and the cold, unyielding eyes of Beatrice and Elena. She had stood her ground against a machine designed to crush anyone who dared to speak the truth.

"It wasn't easy," Clara said quietly, her voice steady. "For a long time, I thought silence was the only way to survive in that family. I thought if I kept my head down, did the analysis, and ignored the corruption, it would eventually fix itself from the inside."

"Systems like that don't fix themselves," Marcus replied. "They consume everyone who stays silent until there's nothing left. It took extraordinary courage to turn the camera on yourself, to use your own vulnerability as the proof they couldn't dismiss."

"I didn't do it for revenge," Clara said, looking out the window at the clear American sky. "I did it for the soldiers who trusted those logistics reports in the field, the ones who relied on equipment that was supposed to be safe and functional. They deserved better than a family of thieves hiding behind medals and uniforms."

Marcus nodded slowly. "You’ll need to testify before the Senate committee next week. It won't be easy; the defense attorneys will try to discredit you, and the old guard in the Pentagon will try to paint you as a rogue actor."

"Let them try," Clara replied, her eyes bright with quiet determination. "I have the receipts, the logs, and the truth. They can't intimidate me anymore."
